Alexandra Constantinescu

Biography

I started my academic career motivated by a strong ambition to make a positive contribution to the development and growth of the hospitality industry in general - and food and beverage sector in particular. Having a solid educational background in food studies and culinary arts management, I now teach subjects related to food, culture, and society; experience design and conceptualisation; food and beverage operations; leadership and entrepreneurship; digital marketing and brand management.

My teaching style is innovative, with a touch of classic. I believe that a lecture can be inspiring and thought-provoking - but must be backed up by constructive debate, real-life industry practice and solid investigation. Hands-on, practical application of theory, as well live interactions and technology are also part of my teaching.  I like bringing my own research and expertise into my lessons, and I always empower students to share their experiences, their own learnings and industry know-how. In a world where information is abundantly available, I teach students to use their critical, analytical thinking, and make the most of their creativity – so that they are ready for any challenge that comes their way.

Research is an important aspect of my academic practice. I am primarily interested in gastronomy and food studies, and I am currently investigating aspects related to gastronomic acculturation of immigrant communities. As an immigrant myself, I have always been fascinated by the way in which cultures blend and merge together. I found that food plays a key role in the way in which we adapt, evolve, and embrace new cultures. I also have a particular interest in social media/influencer marketing and its impact on our food choice, eating out, and everyday culinary habits. My PhD research encompasses all these aspects and aims to shine a light on factors that shape, define, and re-define our relationship with food, culture, and society.

I am a Member of the Council for Hospitality Management Education (CHME), an Affiliate Member of the Institute of Hospitality, and a Fellow of the AdvanceHE. As an entrepreneur, I have been involved in a range of freelance activities, from private catering to supper clubs and food business consultancy. For the past 10 years I have been working with renowned UK/international food & beverage and hospitality brands on projects related to content creation, media, and promotional campaigns. My freelance work was recognised with a nomination for the ‘Food Influencer of the Year’ Award in 2019 and a Culinary Blogger of the Year Award in 2023. Throughout the years I delivered keynotes, panel interviews, talks and presentations to a range of academic and industry conferences (CHME Leeuwarden 2023; Restaurant and Innovation Expo – London Excel 2022; Food Bloggers Conference Bucharest 2018, 2019, 2022).

I love a challenge; I thrive in an academic environment – and I am here to make a positive difference. To inspire. To nurture. And most importantly: to contribute to the growth and development of the new generation of hospitality professionals.
