BA (Hons) Hotel and Events Management

The aim of this module is to develop a sound basis for understanding the role of the hotel manager, the professional hotel working environment and to be able to use this knowledge to prepare for the transition from university to professional life and career development. You will study current theoretical and practical approaches and literature on the role of the hotel manager in creating a sustainable future for business and society and the skills and knowledge needed for this profession.

This module equips you with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to be able to develop persuasive, engaging and successful digital marketing and communication campaigns as applied to contemporary hotel and events industry. You will learn how to plan, manage, and evaluate digital marketing campaigns; how to create and deliver value for an increasingly demanding digital audience; and how to leverage co-creation and electronic word-of-mouth to gain visibility and influence in the digital sphere.

The purpose of this module is to assess the global hotel and event landscape in relation to the external environments that influence and/or innovate the industry in different destination contexts. You will be made aware of the changes in the landscape and how to impact on these and react to them. You will be introduced to the international hotel and event industry and explore businesses in a range of political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental, and ethical landscapes.

The purpose of this module is to introduce you to the human resource management element of manging people and culture in a hotel setting, and in doing so taking into consideration local, regional, national and international values. You will explore different corporate cultures in hotel management and the diversity of the workforce in the international hotel industry.

The purpose of this module is to introduce the operational and strategic thinking needed for the management of event planning and operations, which is underpinned with relevant theories, concepts, and empirical constructs. Event planning and operations are considered from several perspectives – the manager, workforce, guests / customers, stakeholders, and governments.

The purpose of this module is to introduce you to research philosophies, principles and practices, and in developing your research skills you write a research proposal for your industry research project in the final year of study. The broad aim of this module is to advance your thinking of research methods and methodologies by introducing both design and conduct of study, and to develop your confidence as a researcher.

This module will develop hotel and events management experience and employability skills and prepare you for work in a hotel and/or events business environment. As part of this module, you will engage in an internship or work-based development setting to enhance your career prospects in hotels and to comprehend the business of hotels and events, transferring learning into practice through workplace activities.

The aim of this module is to notably inspect the role of culture in society as resource in the business of events to explore the meaning, value and reach of events that are inherently cultural for various publics, place-makers, and populations in society. It takes a critical look at event, culture and society, and takes on insights from subject areas including anthropology, cultural studies, heritage, history, sociology, and marketing.

This module aims to provide you with in-depth knowledge about the main technological and managerial principles behind disruptive innovation and concomitant organisational and social change within the hotel industry. The module is designed to equip you with skills and knowledge to confidently analyse the implications of external forces for innovation and evaluate how the latest digital technologies can be used to lead innovation initiatives.

In this module you will explore how service and experiences engage the senses and lead to emotive changes. It involves applying theoretical perspectives to develop skills and techniques in hotels. The module allows you to build work-based skills in hotel management that are underpinned with relevant theory. It facilitates an understanding of how the core elements of hotels contribute to their effective and coherent design; and how consumer experiences can be managed.

This module explores the role of design in events, introducing an understanding and application of what design is, design principles, design concepts, operational design, theming, staging, and production. Furthermore, the module will explore ideas on creativity including developing creative thought, procedures and practices. The module will reflect on design at events as a management tool.

This module is designed to develop an understanding of the principles of Finance and Revenue Management (RM) in the hospitality industry. This has become a major strategic tool in the successful operations of these businesses. The module provides an overview of Financial and Revenue Management, encompassing all aspects of these disciplines from a variety of perspectives – strategic, marketing, operations and human resources.

The research project allows you to express knowledge and understanding and shows the ability to analyse and critique an issue in the hotel/hospitality industry. The broad aim of the module is to give you extensive real-world exposure to an actual hotel or hospitality business issue that requires intervention, and in doing so advancing your research skills to effectively replicate the role of a researcher in the professional workplace or higher study.

This module aims to develop a critical awareness of leadership theories, models and research and its relationship to other critical organisational behaviour (“O.B”) concepts (such as culture, motivation, learning, attitudes etc.) as applied to the hospitality industry. You will critically evaluate the usefulness of leadership, followership and related organisational behaviour concepts and apply them with discernment in an organisational context.

This module develops your understanding of the strategic management challenges facing events businesses and the industry in an operating environment impacted by multiple external factors. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives and applied case studies from the local, national and international events industry the module provides you with the opportunity to compare and contrast diverse strategic management decisions made by the various organisations in response to the challenges and barriers of an ever-changing operational environment.

A major part of this module is devoted towards the planning, management and staging of a live hotel-based event. This module will require you to work in teams with allocated roles and responsibilities. You will go through the practical planning, organisational and technical considerations for the staging of a live hotel event and in doing so gain a real depth of understanding of the stage-by-stage process of successful event management.

This module aims to provide an understanding of the key aspects in hotel sustainability management nationally and internationally and use of a range of established techniques, to initiate and undertake critical analysis of information relating to hotel sustainability. You will explore, appreciate and understand the potential environmental issues associated with hotel sustainability management and the different dimensions within hotel sustainability practice.
