Gown hire and photography

Please note that the information below is regarding February 2024 graduation.

Please ensure you register your attendance first and then order your gown.

Deadline: Please order your gown by the extended deadline of 12pm (noon) on Thursday 11 January 2024.

In order to attend your graduation ceremony, you must wear the appropriate academic dress. Your gown consists of a robe, hood and mortarboard (collectively we refer to as the gown). You cannot attend graduation without wearing your gown.

Gowns can be hired from our nominated supplier, Ede & Ravenscroft. It is important to note gowns should be ordered by the extended deadline of 12pm (noon) on Thursday 11 January 2024. Ede & Ravenscroft will endeavour to accommodate late requests where possible or will advise you on how to register your interest to hire your outfit on the day. We strongly advise you do not miss this deadline as you cannot attend your graduation without a gown. Students arriving in inappropriate academic dress or not gowned will be unable to join the ceremony and will not be presented for their award during the ceremony.

To book your gown go to the Ede and Ravenscroft website and follow the instructions given. If you have any issues, please contact Ede and Ravenscroft directly.

When booking your gown please have the following details ready:

  • Height
  • Hat size (circumference of your head taken just above the ears)
  • Chest/bust measurement
  • Qualification (e.g. Foundation Degree, BA (Hons), MSc)
  • Date and time of your ceremony

You should order your gown at the same time as you register your attendance; it’s all done via the same form. If you order a gown but have not registered your attendance, you will not be able to attend the ceremony. You must book a gown to wear to attend your ceremony as you cannot attend without wearing a correct gown. There is a hire charge for academic gowns to students. This applies to all students.

Please be aware that the University retains the right to refuse you entrance to the ceremony if it is considered you are inappropriately dressed.

Your graduation is a celebration of your achievements and a formal occasion. Therefore, you need to wear the appropriate academic dress (consisting of robe, hood and mortarboard, which collectively we call the gown). This is mandatory for the ceremony.

A graduand must wear a Buckinghamshire New University gown appropriate to the level of qualification for which they are being presented, even if the student already holds a higher qualification.

PhDs are awards of Coventry University and the gown will reflect this.

Students are not entitled to wear a University hood or attend graduation unless they have been made an award of the University.

This is a formal event and we ask that you please dress appropriately and smartly for the occasion. However, there is no formal dress code beyond the requirement for the above detailed academic dress. It is advisable to wear suitable footwear as there is a short walk to the theatre from the campus and you may have to negotiate steps up to and down from the stage. Hair grips and safety pins are often required so if you think you will need them please bring them with you.

Military uniform or national dress can be worn by graduating students as long as the academic robe, hood and mortarboard are able to be worn with it.

The gown will be delivered to the Buckinghamshire New University Campus in High Wycombe. You will be able to collect it on the day of your ceremony. Collection will take place as part of the registration process.

You must return your gown at the High Wycombe campus by 5pm on the day of your ceremony. Details of where to return your gown will be provided during the information you receive at registration.

If you are unable to attend your ceremony after placing an order for gown hire, you must contact Ede & Ravenscroft directly.

Deadline: Please book your photography by the extended deadline of 12pm (noon) on Thursday 11 January 2024.

You will be able to have professional photographs taken on the day by our designated supplier, who offer a range of packages. We recommend that you pre book you photographs, when you register on-line, to avoid the queues and benefit from a discounted rate.

If you do not pre-book photography, you can enquire on the day as to whether or not there is any availability left for you to have professional photographs taken. Please note, this is not guaranteed so if you know you would like professional photography, we recommend you book in advance.

You will be able to pre-book your photography when bookings open the term before your ceremony, and you will be advised of this via email.

Photos will be taken of each graduand as they cross the stage. These will be available to view and purchase straight after the ceremony in the Hospitality Zone on the High Wycombe campus.

Those who have pre-booked their gown hire will also automatically receive an email from the designated supplier after their Graduation giving instructions on how to access and purchase their photo after the event should you not wish to do it on the day or require an extra copy.

We are planning to have various pop up photography locations across campus. These can be utilised by all to take your own photographs. You do not need to book slot; they are available throughout the day to use at your convenience.

Please note these are not manned and no camera is provided. It is intended that you will take your own photographs with your own camera.
