Data Protection

Buckinghamshire New University processes personal information to enable it to provide education and support services to its students. For this reason the University holds and processes personal data about its students, staff and other data subjects for academic, administrative and commercial purposes. It also holds personal data to fulfil regulatory and statutory obligations to the government and other associated bodies.

The University ensures that the personal data about its students and staff is managed in accordance with the UK’s data protection laws and regulations. This legislation defines the University’s responsibilities concerning the collection, storage, use and transfer of information about living individuals. It also affords rights to individuals about their personal data, including the right to see information held about them.

Data Protection is currently governed by the Data Protection Act (1998). This will be superseded by the new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into effect on 25th May 2018. The new legislation updates the UK’s existing data protection laws and increases the rights of individuals. This section of the website will be updated regularly to reflect changes in data protection law.
