Why study International Hospitality Management at BNU?

Placements are an integral part of your course. You will benefit from placement opportunities within a range of organisations during the programme, including at our beautiful Missenden Abbey, in Great Missenden.

You will gain experience in the different departments that make up both front of house and back of house operations, such as the restaurant, housekeeping and conference and events department. These shifts may involve some late finishes on occasion, as well as weekend work, so that you get to see all aspects of what the sector offers.

Your placements will be practice-led, creating an innovative approach to hospitality education and training.  This approach will allow you to gain work-based experience, real-world learning and vital knowledge in international hospitality management, combined with professional and technical skills.

On your placements you’ll work, and gain experience, at an operational level in your first year and will move to more supervisory and managerial roles and capabilities in your second and third year.  

 Our strong links with employers, professional and trade associations, representing a range of business environments across the hospitality industry, will provide you with a practical and an outstanding student experience. You will develop your industry knowledge and professional skills by gaining valuable experience in a fully commercial hotel and other industry partner hotels alongside your studies. You’ll also be able to create connections with experts and build valuable networks.

You will also benefit from trips, site visits and residential field trips to some of the most iconic locations. These include places such as Urban Pubs and BarsFlat IronThe Ivy CollectionZetter Hotels, but may vary from year to year.

You’ll learn from staff with current experience in hospitality and hotel management, with many involved in research within these areas. We will encourage you to grow as a professional, helping you to gain the confidence and flexibility you need to thrive in these diverse industries.

During your time on international hospitality management course, we’ll give you the teachings you’ll need to ensure businesses are sustainable, profitable and provide a high-quality experience for both customers and staff. 

What will I study?

If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding career within the service industry, our international hospitality management course can help you gain the skills you’ll need to succeed. Designed to include the right balance of transferable skills, specialist knowledge and work-based experience you’ll graduate prepared for your future career and give you the skills employers are looking for.

This course will help you to develop your technical, supervisory and managerial abilities, preparing you for a global industry. We will help you develop solid business principles, alongside gaining contemporary sector knowledge and plenty of hands-on experience working in areas related to your field of study.

You’ll gain a thorough grounding in the subject and the theoretical principles that underpin hospitality policy and management. We also place a strong emphasis on skills development for the workplace, including presentation skills, research, data analysis, budgeting, negotiation and content planning.

During the programme you will spend time in the classroom learning the theoretical elements that underpin your knowledge base. You will also spend time in the working environment of the hotel and conference centre Missenden Abbey, and our industry partners, gaining experience throughout the course in: reception, restaurants, housekeeping and conference and events.

This mixture of theory and practice will help ensure the relevance of your studies to employability. This will help you to develop solid business principles, alongside contemporary sector knowledge, and plenty of hands-on experience working in areas related to your field of study.

You’ll learn how to develop a business through effective communication using a variety of tools, demonstrating strong consumer understanding and a have mind-set that takes measured risks, that perceives and creates opportunities and has the resourcefulness to pursue opportunities in an ethical and sustainable way. 

We balance academic rigour with industry readiness, skills, knowledge, and experience. During this programme you will develop a range of relevant skills and knowledge alongside personal development goals. By linking the programme directly to industry advice and expertise, we will support you to become 'industry ready' from the very beginning of your journey.

You’ll learn about, and reflect on, the impacts of the hospitality industry on the environmental, economic, social, and cultural fabric of society. You’ll also be able to recognise and consider the management disciplines which underpin the management of the hospitality industry and their individual operations. You’ll also gain a strong understanding of the markets, customers’ needs and behaviour, and other drivers of change that affect the development of the hospitality industry and their products from an entrepreneurial point of view. This will enable you to develop effective management strategies for hospitality organisations and enterprises.

You’ll develop the necessary skills required to manage a successful hospitality business including technical, supervisory and managerial skills and techniques with a specific application to the international world of hospitality.

How will I be taught and assessed?

On our BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Management, you’ll be able to study at both our High Wycombe Campus and Missenden Abbey, where you’ll be able to explore the world of hospitality management.

What are the course entry requirements?

A typical offer will require a UCAS tariff score of: 88 - 112

UCAS points can be obtained through qualifications such as A levels, T levels, BTEC or an Access to Higher Education course in a relevant subject. Please list all your qualifications on the application form as you will be asked to provide copies when we receive your application.

We also accept applicants who have achieved the Access to HE Diploma (QAA approved) with 60 credits overall and 45 credits at Level 3.

As an inclusive University, we recognise that applicants who have been out of education for some time may not have the formal qualifications usually required for entry to this course. We welcome applications from those who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and commitment to study and have the relevant work experience that equips them to succeed on the course. We will assess this from the information provided in your application – in particular your personal statement - to help us decide on your eligibility for the course.

International students for whom English is a second language require an IELTS score of 6.0, with no area below 5.5 (or a recognised equivalent).

Our BA (Hons) in International Hospitality Management helps prepare you for a range of career possibilities, such as expert operatives, supervisors and junior managers. Creative ‘intrapreneurs’ and start-up business entrepreneurs (niche services) have also been defined for the hotel, meetings and events, banqueting and business venues.

You may also wish to stay on at Buckinghamshire New University and study a postgraduate degree, such as MSc Hospitality Leadership or MSc Hotel Innovation and Sustainability.
