Research and Knowledge Exchange

Research and Knowledge Exchange

Research and enterprise activities are central to BNU’s mission to make a positive difference to industry and society, as well as enhancing teaching and learning. In line with the University’s Thrive 28 strategy, the scholarship and research undertaken at BNU helps us to tackle society’s biggest challenges and make a difference to people’s lives in our local campus communities. BNU’s research spans across a wide range of fields and encompasses all our academic schools.

BNU’s Inclusive Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy actively promotes diversity in all its forms, ensures equitable access to research opportunities, and cultivates an environment where all voices are heard, valued and celebrated. In doing so, BNU aims to foster a high-impact research community that reflects the richness of the world it seeks to understand and improve.

BNU has ranked in the top ten for postgraduate student satisfaction for two consecutive years in the Advance HE’s Postgraduate Research Experience survey, completed by postgraduate research students at UK higher education institutions. In 2023, Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) ranked 8th best in the UK for overall satisfaction and 1st for research culture, responsibilities, supervision,  community and progression.

Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) also performed well in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) with 44% of BNU research judged to be of world-leading  or internationally excellent quality. Visit our REF2021 page for further details of BNU’s REF2021 submission and impact case studies.

Handcycling performance

Handcycling is a dynamic and liberating form of Paracycling used by individuals who are unable to ride a conventional road bike or tricycle due to either a spinal cord injury or lower extremity physical impairment(s). Whilst collective understanding as to the biomechanics and physiology of handcycling continues to improve there are still several gaps in current scientific knowledge as to the determinants of handcycling performance.
