Course Spotlight – BSc Sustainable Product Design

Our Sustainable Product Design course encompasses technology, environmental awareness, innovation and cultural and critical insight. Meaning you’ll be able to look at product design from both a designer and user approach, making you the ideal candidate for new and exciting roles within the industry.

Did you know our Production and Manufacturing Engineering course were ranked 3rd for Student Voice and 3rd for teaching out of 36 Higher Education Institutes in the National Student Survey, 2023.

Facilities 

At BNU we’ve developed a range of inspiring spaces, studios and workshops for you to experiment with design and techniques. You’ll have access and expert teaching in CAD suites, 3D Studios and a wood, metal and ceramic workshop. We also have a range of experienced technical demonstrators and supports on-hand to help and guide you as you achieve and create your ideas.

In these spaces you’ll produce 3D models, fully working prototypes, and computer models to demonstrate your design solutions. In these workshops you’ll be able to experiment with a range of different materials, developing traditional hand skills and working with new technologies such as our MetraSCAN 3D and utilising the latest CNC machining and techniques.

Industry Links 

As a Sustainable Product Design student, you’ll be based at our High Wycombe Campus. High Wycombe is a town renowned for its historical contribution towards the furniture making and design industry, and manufacturing industry. Only a short journey away from London, Oxford and Reading, you’ll be able to access a range of business and organisations relevant to product design. There are ample opportunities for visits to sites of historical and contemporary interest.

However, location isn’t the only thing that keeps us connected. This course has an array of industry-links and successful alumni who are willing to come in to give guest lectures, set live project briefs and run master classes. They also offer plenty of networking opportunities outside the classroom, with site visits.

Employability routes

The dynamic and innovative nature of this course offers you the chance to explore a range of career routes. From product designer, industrial designer, model maker and automotive designer, to a design engineer, exhibition and event designer and CAD visualiser and technician, the opportunities are endless.

Previous graduates of this course have gone on to work as a product designer for Nokia, modelmakers for Sony, aerospace designer for BAE, and engineering designer for BMW. Other graduates have turned their attention to starting their very own design business, while others work within design consultancies.
