Jazmin Arnold and patient Jane

“Absolutely wonderful” BNU student nurse features in ITV A+E series

A Buckinghamshire New University student nurse has featured in a new ITV series with one patient describing her as “absolutely wonderful” and going “above and beyond”.

Jazmin Arnold recently completed her final year of a BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult) with NMC Registration degree at BNU. She was midway through a six-week placement at the A+E department at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow as part of her studies at the same time ITV film crews were filming a 10-part fly-on-the-wall series called Emergency Nurses: A+E Stories, which follows nurses in accident and emergency departments as they battle to save patients’ lives.

In episode six, Jazmin is seen carrying out medical observations on the resuscitation ward for a patient called Jane who has been experiencing problems with her heart.

Every little thing that you do, it makes someone’s day that little bit better, it makes someone’s health that little bit better.”

Speaking about her experience in A+E, Jazmin tells ITV: “When you’re flying around, you’ve got so much to do, it makes the shift go quicker. Every little thing that you do, it makes someone’s day that little bit better, it makes someone’s health that little bit better.”

Jazmin is seen building a strong rapport with Jane, a part of the job she enjoys. “I have such a good bond with my female patients, they always have nice stories to tell you about when they were younger, I always hear about when they met their husbands. It’s just nice to have a little girly bond with my patients.”

Jazmin went on to discuss how she got into nursing after initially considering a career in medicine, before being an A+E patient left her wanting to become a nurse after finishing school. Now, she is in no doubt as to where she wants to work once she becomes a registered nurse after telling cameras: “I want to come back to A+E.”

“When I actually get the [nurses] uniform, that’s when proud will hit me. When I’ve got that uniform and I can sign next to ‘meds’, that is my own name, and no-one needs to co-sign; that’s when I know I’m a registered nurse.”

“The people who are going to be super proud of me are obviously my family, my Mum, three younger siblings. I’m the youngest and everyone looks up to me.”

Speaking about Jazmin’s care, Jane told ITV: “Jazmin is absolutely wonderful, she’s great. She’s done everything right.” When speaking to Jazmin herself, Jane told her: “You’ve gone above and beyond.”

For Jazmin, receiving such gratitude is the highlight of the job. “The best thing is when the patient is really grateful and really happy that you’re their nurse. Obviously, they’re unwell, but I think it makes it better for them and for me to just build a nice relationship with your patients.”
