Janie Codona's story

Janie Codona's story

Our, BSc (Hons) Community Development graduate, Janie, sat down and shared with us her experience as a Bucks student and how she uses the lessons she learnt today.

Janie originally decided to study a Bucks due to her location and relationships she had struck up with the lecturers. “I was living in South Bucks as my Mother was ill. I also knew Professor Margaret Greenfields and felt confident that I could approach her for advice about possibly studying at the university.”

During her time at Bucks, Janie shared that the Bucks environment and support she received helped her to reach her goals career goals as a Manager for One Voice 4 Travellers. “The ability to mix with others who were also studying and feeling that I was welcomed and accepted even though I was a Romany Gypsy helped me. Studying at Bucks University has provided me with a positive and supportive beginning for my aspirations to further my education.

I have gone on to study for and obtain my Masters at London MET UNI, a Post Graduate in Conflict Resolution at Coventry UNI and at present I am studying for my PhD at De Montfort University Leicester, none of this would have been possible without my having had such a positive learning experience at Bucks New University. I am now a manager of One Voice 4 Travellers where I now actively encourage others to expand their skills and education especially women and young girls, my motto is it does not matter what your age you can seek out further/higher education and with education comes choice and the ability to expand what you do in life.

I would never have gone on to study further if my initial foray into further education had not been as positive and enjoyable as it was while studying at Bucks and I will always be thankful to Bucks New University.”

Janie remains a strong supporter of all we have to offer and our inclusive nature. “No matter what your background is or where you live, you will be welcomed at Bucks. The university is supportive and treats all students equally.  My education is still progressing and I enjoying the different opportunities, life experiences, and friendships I continue to develop, thank you so much Bucks New University and everyone for providing me with the confidence to believe in myself.”
