Recognition and Management of the Seriously Ill Child (0-18 Years)

Led by our experienced and supportive staff, this short course will help enhance your skills in caring for children who have the potential to become seriously ill.

Credits: 20 credits at Level 6 and Level 7.

Why study this subject?


This course is designed for registered healthcare professional with experience in paediatric care. It's suitable if you're a member of a multidisciplinary team working with children who have the potential to become seriously unwell.

Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?


This module has been developed for practitioners working in general paediatrics, paediatric accident and emergency, paediatric high dependency units and children's outpatients.

The course covers the following topics:

  • ABCDE patient assessment
  • ECG recognition
  • SBAR
  • management of the fitting child
  • blood gas analysis
  • auscultation
  • x-ray analysis
  • management of the seriously ill child in the community.

How will I be taught and assessed?


A variety of strategies will be used to help facilitate your development and consolidation of clinical assessment, professional and management skills. These include assigned reading, key-note lectures to provide depth of insight into specific content and enquiry-based learning.

You'll be encouraged to consider the central issues to your own area of practice and to debate both current provision and future developments. Our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) will be used to encourage group discussion.

Assessment will be based on an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and a written exam.

When will this course run?


This course runs on Thursdays from 10am - 5pm.

 

What are the course entry requirements?

In order to take this course you must be a registered healthcare professional with experience in paediatric care. You must also possess 120 credits at level 5.
