My BNU story as an International Student

My BNU story as an International Student

Why?

I was born and raised in Brno, Czech Republic. Despite Brno being the second biggest city of Czech, it is quite village-like. It is one of the things that fuelled my love for traveling and exploring other countries. While also fuelling my desire to call another country my home.

Why BNU?

In Czech, I chose to study in a college of art and business, a strange combination, I know. However, it was the perfect foundation for my future studies. At first, I was looking into various universities and courses – public relations, management, marketing, business – but that was only the business side of my college studies. I have always been fond of creating, painting, drawing, sculpting and design. I wanted to find something where I could nurture my creative side. Soon I discovered a course called Creative Advertising which seems like the perfect merge of both.

BNU immediately stood out with its successful alumni and location – close to London but not too close to wreak havoc in my wallet. Not to mention, London is where all the biggest advertising agencies are.

Moving out is scary and moving out to a different country is even scarier. Unfortunately, I had to do all of this in the middle of the pandemic when everything was either restricted or closed. Once I was done self-isolating, I was able to meet my new flatmates and explore the area. High Wycombe has a nice balance of all the shops you need and beautiful nature- when everything was closed, walks helped to keep me sane.

Eventually, I met the people on my course in person and joined some of many free societies available. What made my first year less scary is that BNU has a nice family atmosphere. They are doing everything they can to help students make lots of friends and feel at home. I most certainly do.

Fast forward to my second year, I got to experience Freshers` week and all the fun events/activities BNU offers, that I missed out on in my first year. Thanks to the Big Deal, I was surprised that all these events and activities are free so I made sure to try out everything I can.

Advice

My biggest bit of advice is, do not be afraid of asking for help and keep in mind that everyone is more or less going through the same thing.

BNU will do their best to help you with everything. They helped me overcome some of the biggest challenges I have faced since moving here. Since English is not my first language, I did not know how to structure an essay. That is why I got in touch with Student Learning and Achievement Advice Centre here at BNU, and with their help, successfully achieved high grades.
