Dr Nicola Mallowan

Biography

I have been at Buckinghamshire New University since 2000; starting as an undergraduate student, completing a PhD and becoming a member of the teaching team. I am Course Leader for the Forensic Psychology Degree and teach on the Applied Forensic Psychology Masters. I am Group Lead of the Drug and Alcohol Research Group and am currently writing the BNU Drug and Alcohol Strategy. I believe that it is important for Bucks New University to be a civic university and therefore uphold links and partnership working with local charities and organisations.

Prior to teaching, I was a Probation Services Officer and Restrictions on Bail Officer for the National Probation Service Substance Misuse Team. I have also worked for Turning Point, delivering a Structured Day Programme to people with Substance Misuse Disorder.

My qualifications include a first-class honours degree in Psychology (Bucks New University), a PhD in Psychology (Bucks New University) and a PGCert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

I am a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow (British Psychological Society), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advanced Higher Education).

My specialist area of research focused on the psychology of therapeutic relationships within substance misuse treatment and its impact on outcomes. In collaboration with the National Probation Service, I conducted research profiling a domestic violent offender, with findings informing Bucks County Council’s Domestic Violence ‘Sunlight Project’.

I am currently involved with research projects on, substance use pre and post Covid; self-medicating students with ADHD; why certain minority groups fail to present to substance misuse treatment and substance misuse in a female population.
