Why study Global Security (Online) at BNU?

The ultimate in flexibility, our fully online format allows you to study from anywhere in the world, making it ideal for those balancing work or family commitments, and for students living outside the UK or unable to relocate. You’ll have access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and flexible tutoring sessions to fit around your schedule.

Online doesn’t mean alone. Throughout the course, we provide a high level of support through online face-to-face sessions one or two evenings per week and electronically, using our Virtual Learning Environment. Our online learning platform helps you make the most of your time studying and gives you access to expert-led content, virtual simulations and real-world case analysis at home.

In an online setting, we bring you together with students from related pathways (such as Aviation and Investigation), giving you a solid grounding in global security theory, structured analytical methods, and cybersecurity fundamentals. At the end of the shared first year, you have the option to change to any of those linked courses.

We aim to equip you with a toolkit that employers are looking for from day one. You’ll learn to analyse complex risk scenarios, present clear security briefs and make rapid decisions under pressure. With an internship embedded into your second year, you’ll graduate with both the theoretical grounding and the professional network to hit the ground running. BNU graduates prove their skills in the field.

This is a hands-on, active learning experience for every student. We are proud of all our graduates and the exciting careers they have jumped straight into, regardless of their background or prior educational achievement. Each of their great career launches are a testament to the professional confidence and technical expertise they developed with us on this course.

What will I study?

We start with the foundations of global security, information security, and analytical techniques. You’ll then focus on specialist intelligence skills, such as strategic intelligence development, financial intelligence gathering, and advanced analytical methods used across public and private sectors. You'll examine how intelligence is used to manage national and international risks, and how political and commercial contexts shape intelligence operations. The course also places strong emphasis on communication and professional confidence, preparing you to brief stakeholders and present intelligence clearly and persuasively. Your studies will culminate in a major research project in your final year, allowing you to explore a topic that reflects your future ambitions.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will study one module per term. Each module follows a structured approach that enhances your understanding and progress:

  • The programme follows the BNU standard timetable for three 10-week-long terms per year. There is no teaching on this programme during the summer.
  • The programme will take up to six years to complete.
  • One month before each term starts, pre-course study materials will be released, allowing you to prepare in advance.
  • Each week is dedicated to a specific theme or concept.
  • You will be guided to complete self-directed study with tutor support available as needed.
  • You will then attend a weekly tutorial where you will have the chance to interact with the group and develop your ideas further under the expert guidance of your expert module leader.
  • Additional distance learning continues before assessments are submitted.
All of our lecturers have years of real-world professional experience.
