Why study Global Security with Investigation (Online) at BNU?

The ultimate in flexibility, our fully online format allows you to study from anywhere in the world, making it ideal for those balancing work or family commitments, and for students living outside the UK or unable to relocate. You’ll have access to our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and flexible tutoring sessions to fit around your schedule.

Online doesn’t mean alone. Throughout the course, we provide a high level of support through online face-to-face sessions one or two evenings per week and electronically, using our Virtual Learning Environment. Our online learning platform helps you make the most of your time studying and gives you access to expert-led content, virtual simulations and real-world case analysis at home.

In an online setting, we bring you together with students from related pathways (such as Intelligence Analysis and Aviation), giving you a solid grounding in global security theory, structured analytical methods, and cybersecurity fundamentals. At the end of the shared first year, you have the option to change to any of those linked courses.

We aim to equip you with a toolkit that employers are looking for from day one. You’ll learn to analyse complex risk scenarios, present clear security briefs and make rapid decisions under pressure. With an internship embedded into your second year, you’ll graduate with both the theoretical grounding and the professional network to hit the ground running. BNU graduates prove their skills in the field.

This is a hands-on, active learning experience for every student. We are proud of all our graduates and the exciting careers they have jumped straight into, regardless of their background or prior educational achievement. Each of their great career launches are a testament to the professional confidence and technical expertise they developed with us on this course.

What will I study?

We start with the foundations of global security, intelligence concepts, cyber risks, and structured analysis. As you specialise, you’ll develop key investigative skills in areas such as terrorism and counter-terrorism, digital forensics, and criminal justice systems. You'll explore the ethical dimensions of investigation work and learn how to lead inquiries across both public and private sectors. This course also places strong emphasis on communication and professional confidence, preparing you to give presentations, assess evidence critically, and manage decision-making under pressure. In your final year, you’ll complete a research project on a topic that reflects your professional goals, helping you graduate with both subject expertise and investigative credibility.

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will study two modules per term. Each module follows a structured approach that enhances your understanding and progress:

  • The programme follows the BNU standard timetable of three 10-week-long terms per year. There is no teaching on this programme during the summer.
  • One month before each term starts, pre-course study materials will be released, allowing you to prepare in advance.
  • Each week is dedicated to a specific theme or concept.
  • You will be guided to complete self-directed study, with tutor support available as needed.
  • You will then attend a weekly tutorial per module where you will have the chance to interact with the group and develop your ideas further under the expert guidance of your course module leader.
  • Additional distance learning continues before assessments are submitted.

Assessments are designed to be highly relevant and current. A mix of coursework, reports and strategic analysis assignments will ask you to research and analyse contemporary challenges and issues. Feedback is provided throughout, allowing you to reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement. There are no traditional exams on this programme. A dedicated Personal Tutor will support and coach you online throughout your studies.

One of the standout aspects for me was the lecturers. They bring a wealth of professional knowledge and experience to the table, and they’re genuinely passionate about sharing that with students. This is a course that not only builds knowledge but pushes you to develop a critical, inquisitive mindset that will serve you long after graduation.
