Simulation is an important aspect of our nursing and healthcare programmes, and across our three campuses we have working wards, theatres and other simulation labs to help you develop. Students regularly spend time in these areas, to practice technical skills and use the newest technologies, in a safe and supportive environment.

We use simulation manikins programmed to act like humans, and ‘moulage’ – the process of applying mock (and often gorily lifelike) injuries for training purposes. We also engage service users in role-play sessions allowing us to create realistic scenarios where students get can get feedback to boost their confidence before going out on placement. As well as this at our Uxbridge and Aylesbury site, we have a Multitrack system. This is a birth chair, suspended rope and birthing ball to help support women in labour.

Students will also benefit from up-to-date PROMPT advanced models that can simulate physiological birth, obstetric emergencies, and neonatal mannequins where they can practice resuscitation using authentic equipment. All the technology and equipment supplied to our students enables them to become familiar with kit and techniques used within the local hospital trusts.

As well as being supported by your lecturers during skills sessions, the Skills Acquisition Simulation team are on hand to help develop your learning and technique.

A variety of healthcare and social work, community nursing, paramedic science and operating department practice programmes are taught at our High Wycombe campus and utilise the below simulation suites.

Hire our facilities

Our simulation suites are available to hire for training, filming and other events.

We can offer bespoke courses created with our technicians. We have a team of technicians available to assist with scenarios and can offer moulage to assist with the authenticity of real life situations. Please note that if you are using any equipment you will require a technician on site. There is an additional cost for technicians and any consumables used.

We have six mobile CCTV / Scotia Medical Observation and Training System (smots) cameras as well as fixed ceiling smots cameras in most simulation rooms. Each camera comprises a 360-degree pan tilt zoom with a highly sensitive microphone and directional loudspeaker. Suites have TV displays which allow simultaneous observation of training and the output can be displayed in any of the skills suites or lecture theatres. We have a range of industry standard mid and high fidelity manikins and human patient simulators, scrub sinks and disposable clinical equipment.

All of our simulation rooms have infrared hearing loops, built-in projectors and screens with audio visual connections, as well as flip charts upon request. We also have equipment available to enable live audio/video streaming.
