Why study International Business Studies at BNU?

Our BSc (Hons) International Business Studies degree has been specifically designed by our industry experienced lecturers to reflect the needs of people engaged in international business management and allows you to understand the function, operations and knowledge required to succeed in global business industries.

Our lecturers are here to support you throughout the course and beyond. Buckinghamshire New University has a strong alumni community, and recruitment fairs frequently include alumni as employers. The College of Leadership and Innovation recently hosted a highly successful employability event, "BeyondBNU – Launching Your Career". The event provided students with a valuable platform to network with industry experts, recent alumni, and career advisors, offering invaluable insights into the professional world.

Our degree covers many disciplines to give you a solid understanding of business skills, including marketing, people management, international business finance, data analysis, international law, and more. You also have the opportunity during your course to choose some modules.

Modules are enhanced by guest speakers from industry bodies, live briefs from local businesses, and may include visits to nearby points of interest. In 2024, students enjoyed a tour of the London Stock Exchange. This connection between your classroom studies and the working world helps to build your confidence and understanding of how the topics studied are applied in the field. You will be better prepared for the time after you graduate.

If you are interested in International Business Studies, but feel you want to develop your confidence in degree-level learning first, this course is also offered as a four-year programme including an initial Foundation Year, starting in September.

The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto the undergraduate course. Once you pass your Foundation Year, you are guaranteed a place onto your chosen course and will enter the first year of the international business degree.

What will I study?

With our BSc (Hons) International Business Studies course, you will gain knowledge and expertise in project planning and management for local, national and international organisations and groups, as well as the tools to start your own business. With consistently high student satisfaction ratings for our Business courses across a variety of university league tables and national surveys, gain confidence you will get where you want to be.

Learn about diverse subject areas, including global strategies in digital business and how to deal with people across cultures. During each year of the course, some of your modules will be taught alongside students on other undergraduate courses in the College of Leadership and Innovation, meaning you'll quickly get to know a wide group of your peers, and get experience in a wide range of departments. You'll be taught by lecturers who are experts in their subject, including qualified accountants, lawyers, and marketers. First year topics include learning about financial decision making in business, strategies in digital business, and good practices in equality, diversity and inclusion.

Sharing information means you can see the operations of a business manager in many different departments of a business, and you'll understand how each of the parts of business fit together to make the whole.

During your second year you will study topics including international trade and leading and managing diverse teams. This will help you develop skills including working effectively in a team as well as an understanding of how external environments impact organisations across the globe. You'll also learn about data collection and analysis, and how to apply the data insights to making informed business decisions. You will be able to choose optional modules that you are most interested in, on areas such as business law and generational family businesses.

In your final year, you will focus on preparing for your future and career after graduation. In addition to learning about international finance, supply chain resilience and sustainable strategic agility and innovation, you will undertake an independent professional project. This allows you to examine a contemporary global business management issue, whilst using your time management, professionalism, and personal discipline skills.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Teaching is interactive and student-focused. We blend lectures, workshops, independent study, case studies, live briefs, and guest speakers to enhance your learning experience. We will give you a blend of knowledge, skills and abilities, allowing you to become a day-one-ready graduate. We’ll help you to seamlessly fit into any organisation you choose to join or start as an entrepreneur.

Our assessments are heavily real world centric. With live briefs and cases that challenge you to produce a result and not simply demonstrate knowledge of a subject. We ask for management reports, business plans, people management strategies as well as global marketing campaigns. These are assessed through a mixture of presentations, short films, management reports, memos and briefings.

In your final year you will undertake an independent professional project. You’ll carry out a major piece of independent research, focused on strategic global business issues chosen by you. During this project, you will be supported by an academic supervisor with regular meetings throughout the academic year.

We organise industry visits so you can see how theory is applied in the real world. Our active alumni network provides guest speakers, live briefs, careers talks and job application advice across all three years of your degree. Discuss with business professionals the challenges and solutions they use. Network and gain valuable contacts. Feel prepared for your future career.
