Why study nursing at BNU?

Why study Nursing at BNU?

There are so many reasons to choose Buckinghamshire New University to study nursing; however I’m just going to discuss my personal top reasons for choosing the University for my Degree.

Placements

For me, one of the biggest draws to studying here was the placement links. I had my heart on working my placement hours in the Imperial trust, although this wasn’t guaranteed, luckily I was allocated this trust when selecting in first year. The University even put on an online session before enrolment, going into great detail regarding each placement trust, so this really cemented my decision and gave me the insight needed to make the right decision for me.

Facilities

The simulation labs on site provide a great practical element to our lecture blocks. We are able to practise our clinical skills before demonstrating these on placement, I feel this sets us up for success and gives us the confidence needed to thrive on placement. Now I’ve been in a clinical setting, I can confidently say that the labs and equipment within them are very similar to that found on placement.

Location

The location of the University was a big consideration for me, as I’m living at home and commuting into Uxbridge. For nursing you have the Aylesbury or Uxbridge campuses to choose from, making the course accessible to a wide geographical area. Even if you’re based in High Wycombe, which is where the main campus is and other courses excluding nurses are taught, the campus link bus is a free service which frequent runs to the nursing campuses.

Specialist-teaching

Now I’ve been on the course for just over a year, I have had the pleasure of being taught by a wide range of nursing lecturers. I really appreciate the huge range of specialities the lecturers have and years of experience they bring to their teaching. We have diabetic, GP, ICU and cardiac specialist nurses to name a few, which gives us a wide range of learning experiences and real life advise when practising our clinical skills.

The people

I am a mature student, so I was very apprehensive in my first week of university last year; however, there’s a huge age range of students on nursing programmes, from all walks of life. It’s very easy to make friends and learn from your peers, many of whom already have clinical experience (unlike me) and therefore really help when preparing for placement.

Social life

Finally, University isn’t all about lectures and placement. Your social life is a huge part of enjoying your experience and the SU at BNU is very prominent in everyday life. There are a huge range of events put on for free thanks to the big deal. There is also a Nursing society, who put on study sessions, afternoon teas and lots of other social events to help us student nurses switch off a bit from studying.
