Reflections on my Nursing Journey

Reflections on my Nursing Journey

For those who do not know me, my name is Joanna. I was born and raised in West London, and I am proud to say I have just started my third and final year as a student Nurse.

Most nurses have experienced one “life-changing” moment or experience that inspired them to pursue a career in nursing; for me, receiving a breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 25 confirmed my decision.

As I continue my nursing journey as a third year, I find myself reflecting on what the last three years as a student nurse has meant to me. I have truly enjoyed my time as a student nurse so far, even though I am looking forward to qualifying next year. It’s probably safe to say that I’ll miss this period as it’s been fun to discover new experiences and exploring opportunities while also creating friendships (which I know will last a lifetime).

Immersing myself in university life, serving as a Student Ambassador and a Student Representative, and discovering all there is to offer at BNU has been a great experience. As each year has passed, I've developed my skills and confidence, accepting more responsibilities and greater challenges within nursing.

All of this has influenced my work ethic, professionalism and my personality. However, completing all my academic work so far is not only a huge relief but also an achievement I am proud to have done. Being a student nurse has been an incredible adventure and being a successful registered nurse will hopefully be a new and bigger venture.

Being a registered nurse requires having confidence in your knowledge and skills to be able to make wise clinical decisions, respond quickly to concerns and manage risk. Although at times I've had struggles with acknowledging my own ability, with the support of my course leaders and lecturers I have grown to trust my instincts.

All the hard work and hours put into this course so far has been worth every second.
