Top tips for applying to study children’s nursing at BNU

Applying to study Children’s Nursing at Buckinghamshire New University is exciting — but it can also feel a bit nerve-wracking! Here are my top tips to help you stand out and feel confident throughout the process.

1. Show your “why”

Your passion is what makes your application shine. Talk about why you want to become a children’s nurse — maybe you had a personal experience, love working with kids (though it is more than just loving kids- but it helps!), or feel called to support families in difficult times. Be honest and reflective.

2. Understand the course

Do your research on the Children’s Nursing course at BNU — know what the placements involve, how long the degree is, and what support is available. You’ll spend half your time (or more!) on placement, so it’s good to show that you’re aware and ready for that commitment. Also share how you will cope, what will you do to deal with the stress of the course or assignments. I shared about my faith and how, as a Christian, I would spend more time in my quiet place with God and be with my community as that brings me joy and clarity. I would also share my feelings with those close to me and we’d pray together. But also going out helps, retail therapy is a thing!

3. Get your personal statement right

Use your personal statement to show who you are beyond your grades.

  • Include relevant experience (even volunteering or babysitting!- I babysat frequently, it helps to know that you are good around kids or have experience with them).
  • Mention skills like communication, empathy, teamwork, and resilience.
  • End by explaining why BNU feels like the right place for you.

But make it personal!

4. Prepare for the interview

BNU’s selection days usually include an interview.

Top tip: read your personal statement again before the day — they often ask questions based on what you wrote! Be ready to share real examples that show your caring nature and ability to stay calm under pressure.

Do research on Children’s nursing, the NMC code (the board for the nurses and midwives), and stand out in your interview by showing that you have knowledge related to those field.

5. Be realistic and reflective

Nursing is rewarding but also challenging. Show that you understand both sides — long shifts, emotional moments, and lots of learning on placement. Mention how you plan to stay organised and look after your wellbeing.

6. Engage with the university

If you can, attend an open day or chat with current students online (Unibuddy is a great place to link with current students on this course, and ask questions). It shows genuine interest and helps you feel more confident about your choice.

7. Stay positive and organised

Keep track of deadlines, prepare early, and don’t panic if things take time. Every step — from writing your statement to attending your interview — brings you closer to your goal of becoming a children’s nurse.

Studying Children’s Nursing at BNU is more than just a degree — it’s a journey into a career where you’ll make a real difference every single day. Be yourself, stay passionate, and trust that the right university will see your heart for caring for others.
