Advanced Therapeutic Mental Health Skills for Practitioners

This module will help increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of adult nurses in developing mental health competencies, which will enhance professional practice when caring for patients with a diagnosed mental health condition/symptom.

It will enable you to become trauma-aware and to use a three-phase model of communication to both guide and reflect on your interactions with service users.

Credits: 20 credits at Level 6 and 7

Why study this subject?

This course is designed for qualified adult nursing staff, and will help you develop your experience and skills to work effectively and compassionately with patients diagnosed or exhibiting mental health symptoms.

What will I study?

Led by our supportive and experienced staff, this module will cover:

  • principles, and defining mental health and mental disorder
  • depression, anxiety and psychosis
  • care of the young person
  • trauma in mental health care
  • substance use and misuse.

On successful completion of the module, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate the professional confidence, knowledge and skills required to identify and deliver evidence-based good practice when caring for patients with complex  mental health conditions
  • critically agree a plan of care that will enable a therapeutic alliance, inform a differential diagnosis and make appropriate referrals to mental health services based on evidence based practice
  • develop appropriate management plans for patients diagnosed with mental health conditions/symptoms on the basis of effective person-centred risk/safety assessments and evidence based practice
  • communicate effectively with patients with complex mental health needs using the three phase model.

How will I be taught and assessed?

On this course, you will attend three-hour practical sessions, one lecture and two-hour seminars each week. In addition to this, you are also expected to undertake independent study. You will also benefit from personal tutor time linked to the assessments.

The assessment for this module will be a written assignment based on a case study linked to mental health assessment and treatment using a psychiatric rating tool evidence treatment rationale.

What are the course entry requirements?

In order to apply for this course you must:

  • be employed in an appropriate healthcare setting
  • demonstrate evidence of study within the previous five years
  • demonstrate evidence of Level 6 study.
