Why I chose to study Fashion Promotion and Communication at BNU

Why I chose to study Fashion Promotion and Communication at BNU

Fashion Promotion and Communication is a relatively new course both to BNU and across the board. However, with increasing demand in the fashion Industry for Photographers, Stylists, Art Directors and marketing teams, there has been a need to offer a course for fashion which is not just based around design.

1) Facilities

BNU has amazing technical facilities available to students. In my degree, it was emphasised that we needed to learn the technical skills you need as well as the more conceptual ones. We were inducted in photography and film and were able to rent out and hire equipment whenever we needed it.

As well as the film and photography studios, there is a range of equipment in our Art and Design workshops, we were also encouraged to experiment with Letter Press machines, Screen Printing facilities and a range of film and photography equipment.

Additionally, there are specialist technicians and technical demonstrators on hand to help you out when you are on campus.

2) Opportunities for Collaboration

There are loads of great opportunities for collaboration at BNU and it is often the case that people will help each other out with projects. For example, you may need a videographer to help you create a fashion film. Or you may need a make-up artist to do some SFX for a photoshoot. Collaboration is encouraged at BNU which not only is a great way to support other creatives. But it is also a great way to make friends in different courses.

3) Opportunity to specialise and explore your interests

Although you have to do certain modules, there is often a lot of flexibility in how you approach them. For instance, some people like to take a more commercial approach to a campaign brief whereas others like to have a more conceptual approach.

You can also specialise a lot in your final year. For example, I chose to create a zine in my final year which was mainly focused on photography. However, others in my class chose to create a film or focus more on graphic design.

4) Industry connections

BNU has loads of opportunities to connect with people from industry whether that be through industry talks or live projects. There are plenty of chances to network with industry professionals. This helps you build a network before you even graduate, giving you an advantage when looking for work once you've finished your degree.

5) Art and Design Professional Workshops

Additionally at BNU, fashion and textiles students are given their own personal space in the workshops, something that is not widely available at other universities. These spaces are yours to decorate and make your own, they really are a great place to pin your ideas for inspiration. It also means you have somewhere to work when you don't want to be at home or in the library.

You can also leave any materials or items you may need for your projects there without having to worry about taking things back and forth. The workshops are also open plan, meaning it is the perfect space to discuss ideas and collaborate with other students.

I’ve really enjoyed my time at BNU and being one of the first cohorts to graduate from Fashion Promotion and Communication. The industry connections and opportunities to collaborate with others have really improved my confidence and given me a clearer direction in terms of where I want to go with my career. Additionally, the support that I have received from tutors at BNU has been amazing in allowing me to achieve my best work.
