Networking at BNU

Networking at BNU

When studying at university, it is critical to make the most of the time and opportunities presented to you. Networking is one thing that you can't afford to skip!

At BNU, there are a range of events, meetings and other forms of networking opportunities that will present themselves to you. In this blog, I am going to be taking you through how to create opportunities and make the most of the networking opportunities.

So how do you go about creating opportunities? The first thing I suggest you do is work hard on your course. Over the last two years at BNU, I have had a handful of work experience opportunities, meetings and other things arise simply due to the fact that I work hard at what I am studying. Showing my lecturers that I am passionate about the industry and course. I am definitely not the best, but I do MY best, and that's the key!

The next most important thing I suggest is keep up to date on the news that surrounds your area of study. This is really important for a list of reasons.

Experience everything

Keep an eye out for upcoming events. These events could be at the uni, surround bars and venues or they may be in London or other sounding towns/cities but keep an eye out for events open to the public. Industries talk and it’s good to become a known face.

Get Chatting

It is helpful for when talking to industry professionals if you know the latest industry news and updates. This shows that not only are you passionate, but you also know your stuff, helping you stick out in their mind.

Market yourself

The last thing you can do to create opportunities to network for yourself is to send out your CV and portfolio to companies and employers. Do your best to secure some work experience, remember if you don’t ask you don’t get. There is no better way to meet people and network than work experience in the field of work that interests you.

So, once you have some work experience, or meet and greets lined up, how do you go about networking? Well, there are lots of things you can do to give yourself the best chance.

Remember to stay confident and don't shy away from people, be yourself, this will help create a good impression when you are talking to people. Find out what interests the people you are talking too, though it is important to talk about yourself when networking, it’s also just as important to find out what they are interested in.

Last but by no means least, research information about the people or company you will be meeting. There's nothing more impressive to a possible future employer than if you about their work and company.
