Career Advice that worked for me!

Career Advice that worked for me!

Are you looking for a part-time job while studying or a full-time job post-graduation?

Whatever the reason you are reading this blog, here is some career advice that has helped me pick up work whilst studying.

SELL YOURSELF

The most important point of them all is to sell yourself. Have confidence in your own ability and be your own biggest cheerleader. You’ll need a professional CV, cover letter and maybe even a portfolio or website depending on the sector, these need to show off your experience and skills so make sure you big yourself up as much as possible!

ENTHUSIASM

The most important thing to get a new job or further develop your career is enthusiasm. Not only will this aid you in getting where you want to in your career, but it will also help you stay motivated on your hunt for your new job.

THE RIGHT JOB FOR YOU

Alongside enthusiasm (they work pretty well together), I suggest you find a job that generally interests you and adds experience to the career you want to pursue. Now, although this may seem like it applies more to those looking for a post-graduation job rather than a student looking for a casual job to earn some pocket money while studying, it can actually be relevant for both.

Transferable skills are key as you build your skillset, and even better if you do that in an environment that supports your degree. For example, acting students could look at jobs in local theatres. You could even see what the university offers, here at BNU you can become a Student Ambassador, work for the SU and even take part in graduate schemes.

WORK HARD

As Dwayne, The Rock Johnson always says, “Be the hardest worker in the room”. As much as it is a cheesy cliche line, it’s also a good one to live by. A great way to build your skillset, grow and learn is to work hard towards your goals. You’ll be able to push further in your career, encourage those around you (not just colleagues) and gives you a sense of accomplishment.

GOALS

My final piece of career advice is to have goals to aim for. Working towards something gives you motive, enthusiasm and drive. I suggest planning your end goal and working back from there. For example, if you want your own marketing agency, what do you need to do to get to this point? Once you have a plan, it makes the little steps that bit easier. Also, once in employment make sure you also have internal goals such as promotions, holidays, bonuses or even completing projects.
