Best places to visit in the local area

Best places to visit in the local area

There are many great places to explore in and around High Wycombe.

To begin with, in the town centre there are plenty of activities to get stuck into ranging from an escape room, go karting (within the shopping centre), Cineworld and Hollywood bowl. The Students’ Union has offered free tickets to all of these in the past so make sure to keep an eye out!

If you are struggling for cash the Students’ Union events, workshops and societies are all free for BNU students.

If you are interested in the history side of things The Wycombe Museum, which is within walking distance of the town, is the place to visit. With free entry and coffee shop run by volunteers it’s the best place to learn about the history in the local area. Did you know about High Wycombe’s connection to chairs? The museum provides plenty of information about this and the staff are more than happy to tell you about the place.

There are also some other activities that are a bit further out of town, and may require some sort of transport, which include the Hellfire Caves and Rush trampoline park. The Hellfire Caves are manmade chalk and flint caverns that date back to the mid-18th century and are 260 metres underground.

Even though High Wycombe is a busy town there are also plenty of green spaces to sit and unwind from your studies starting with The Rye, right next to campus. Usually, you can find sports clubs practicing on the field and swans swimming up and down the river. On a sunny day you might even spot an ice cream truck or two. Backing on to the Rye is the Wycombe Rye Lido, a heated outside swimming pool that is open all year round.

Hughenden Park isn’t too far away from the High Wycombe campus either and is only a five-minute walk from Hughenden Student village. It covers approximately 25 acres. On the other side of Hughenden Park sits Hughenden Manor, a Victorian mansion, and National Trust site.

In terms of nightlife, there’s a load of pubs and bars to visit. Of course, there’s also Trilogy, High Wycombe’s nightclub, that’s situated next door to the university. There are also a load of different restaurants and places to grab a bite in the area. From Indian to burgers, there’s something for all tastes.

If you are feeling more adventurous and willing to jump on a bus, in 20 minutes you can be out and exploring the local towns such as Marlow and Amersham. Marlow offers a range of brunch spots which can be finished off with a picturesque walk down the river Thames.

And of course, you can always catch the train from High Wycombe to London Marylebone which is an easy way to get into central London and explore the sights there.
