Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2021, I worked as a Practice Development Midwife, supporting professional education development in the clinical environment. I have been a qualified midwife for over 20 years and have worked within all areas of midwifery, with my last role as Coordinating Senior Midwife on Labour Ward.
I studied for my BSc (Hons) Midwifery degree at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1996 and have worked with in all areas of midwifery practice. I enjoy every aspect of being a midwife however, key areas of interest to me are teaching clinical skills such as suturing, cannulation, maternity emergencies, and enhanced newborn examination where I attained Level 7 distinction in this in skill. I believe midwives are key lead professionals in undertaking the systematic examination of the newborn as this supports continuity of carer and optimises opportunities for health promotion.
I attained my Masters’ in Education in 2024 with Buckinghamshire New University and undertook primary research into students’ experience of undertaking a blended learning midwifery degree programme. Having been integral to the design and delivery of the Midwifery Degree at BNU, I wished to take a close look at the student experience and ensure that it met our objectives for inclusivity and flexibility. The findings reflected a positive student experience and further benefits revealed enhanced preparedness for professional practice and a compassionate, nurturing pedagogy.
I am a real advocate for fostering growth and development and widening access to the midwifery profession through MSW Apprenticeships. Prior to joining BNU, I undertook the role of Project Manager Specialist Midwife with Health Education England in 2019. In this role I helped to develop and deliver the North-West London Maternity Support Worker Apprenticeship Programme. This was a pilot project linked to the Maternity Transformation Programme as part of Better Births recommendations and was a key driver for the development of subsequent MSW Apprenticeships that were established nationwide.
I am a member of the Nursing Midwifery Council, the Royal College of Midwives, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
My passion and prior experience have led me to become Programme Lead for the BSc (Hons) Midwifery Apprenticeship where I partner closely with our Apprenticeship team and local practice partner Trusts, guiding students’ learning and scaffolding growth through collaboration and a supportive culture.
I have many career highlights, but most rewarding has been supporting and providing a respectful, compassionate environment for individuals as they navigate their journey - this includes the establishment of new families, but also nurturing our students to support their transition into professional practice.
