You need to be covered by a TV Licence to watch or record live TV programmes on any channel, or download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer.
This could be on any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console or digital box. If you do any of the above without a valid licence, you risk prosecution and a maximum penalty of up to £1,000, plus any legal costs and/or compensation you may be ordered to pay. You will also still have to buy a TV Licence if you need one.
To find out more, visit the TV Licensing website.
Your room needs to be covered by its own licence if you're plugged in to watch or record programmes as they're being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, or if you download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer.
If you don’t need a TV Licence, we would ask you to let TV Licensing know so that they can update their details. They won’t then send you any letters for approximately two years.

You must vacate the halls when the fire alarm sounds. Familiarise yourself with the fire exit(s) in your flat, so you know where to go when the alarm sounds. It is a breach of your Terms & Conditions not to evacuate the building in the event of a fire alarm. Misuse of fire equipment or failure to evacuate the building during an alarm will lead to disciplinary action being taken by the Accommodation Service.
Any propping or wedging open of fire doors, removal of door closures, tampering with or vandalising the automatic fire detection sensors, blocking of any escape route or misuse and/or malicious discharge of fire-fighting equipment is prohibited. This could subsequently lead to loss of life for you, other residents or a fire fighter. This will lead to action being taken under the halls licence and could result in you losing your accommodation.
Students are not permitted to smoke, cook food or use toasters or kettles in your study bedrooms as steam and smoke will set off the detectors that are installed in all bedrooms. Cooking is only permitted within kitchen areas.
There are onsite laundry facilities available for residents to use. Machines are available 24 hours a day, so you can do your laundry whenever it suits your schedule.
We’ve reduced the prices to make it more affordable for you to stay on top of your laundry. It will now cost £2.70 per wash and £1.20 per dry.
All machines support contactless payments and the Circuit Laundry app, so you can pay and manage your laundry from your phone. As a resident, you’ll also receive several free washes and dries each year as part of your welcome to BNU.
To save time, you can check online to see which machines are available before heading down. Laundry services are provided by Circuit Managed Laundry Systems.
Kitchens are equipped with an iron and ironing board.
Any post you have delivered can be collected from the Brook Street Reception. You must have your student ID to pick up your post.
