Class of 2021 campaign for social issues in BNU Art & Design Degree Show

For the second year running, the celebrated BNU Art & Design Degree Show has moved online.

In celebration of the achievements of the School of Art, Design and Performance’s Class of 2021, the exhibition displays a selection of work from this year’s graduates and exhibits the skills, talent and innovation the students have harnessed and developed while studying at Buckinghamshire New University.

A number of this year’s exhibits draw inspiration from social inequality and sustainability, with a resounding theme of egalitarianism thread through the students’ campaigns.

Aleksandra Budnik, who will graduate this year with a BA in Illustration, has produced a series of images that celebrate women’s rights campaigners and feminist icons through history. She said, “The process of creating and being able to express myself through illustration is an amazing experience, and I truly love it.”

Students on the BA (Hons) Creative Advertising based their work on similar sentiments, with Rafaela Morais Da Silva’s London Underground campaign against sexual abuse and a joint project from Kia Wing and Georgia Shortland to tackle period poverty.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, a large portion of the 2021 cohort’s work was carried out in lockdown.

Sri-Kartini Leet, Head of School for Art, Design and Performance, commented, “Whilst the external situation in recent months has meant we’ve all had to improvise with various tools and methods, the process has been a testament to our students’ positive work ethic, their resilience and ability to innovate and problem-solve. Our students have every chance to reach their full potential and be ready for the workplace and we’re sure they will make a positive and valued contribution in their chosen field, home and abroad.

“Our students have already had a number of successes and we’re honoured to have been part of their journeys. My teams and I would like to congratulate our 2021 graduating year as we wish them every success in their future endeavours.”
