George Kingston-Rayes' story

Our Embedded Electrical Electronic Systems Design and Development Engineer Degree Apprenticeship alumni, George, recently shared with us the lessons he learnt at BNU, and how they’ve helped him thrive in the industry.

Originally drawn to BNU for its reputation and flexibility, George was able to continue his career path and make it work for him. “I had heard good things from previous colleagues who studied here, they offered the apprenticeship I wanted and were able to accommodate my previous studies as APLs (Advanced Prior Learning) So I could join in year 2/4 of the degree apprenticeship. I never thought it would be possible for me to get a degree in the career path I took but BNU made this possible.

George is currently based at Bucks lighting company, Serious Brands. He is also a KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) Associate for BNU. George shared that he gets to apply his taught knowledge on a day-to-day basis. “In this role I can apply my electronic engineering skills to the company through the government scheme supplied by Innovate UK. I work on various lighting and electrical testing and developing a new innovative product aiming to boost business revenue.” The skills learnt in the classroom have enabled George to innovate and delve into his chosen career path. “Much of what I learnt at BNU has been applied in my career, from Engineering Management, which has been vital when wanting to progress in a business, to the various Electrical and Electronic modules that have given me the skills to be able to design and produce complex electrical systems.”

Whilst studying during the pandemic brought its own challenges, George was able to take advantage of the support on offer from BNU. “There was plenty of support available, even as an apprentice, and during the pandemic this support ramped up and through the challenges I was still able to maintain a great grade.”  He also made sure to get involved with our Students’ Union, our free societies and of course nights out. “I would be lying if I said that the social aspect of the uni was not a large part of the great experience. I was able to learn to ski and snowboard free of charge due to Snow Soc and ‘The Big Deal’. The countless nights spent at the SU for various free to attend events were brilliant and cannot forget to mention Varsity!”

When asked if he would recommend studying engineering and the built environment at BNU, George replied “The courses provide all the skills required to progress in Engineering Design, the Electrical Pathway homes in on the specific skills required as an Electrical and Electronic Design Engineer whilst receiving support from a great university to get you through to completion.”
