Academic Misconduct

We have a duty to maintain the standards of our awards by ensuring the integrity of all aspects of our assessment processes.

We expect students to work with academic honesty and to present work that is their own and to properly acknowledge all sources (books, journals, websites etc.) used.

We take incidents of academic misconduct, such as cheating, collusion, plagiarism, impersonation and other breaches of assessment regulations very seriously.

You are advised to read the University’s Academic Misconduct Policy which sets out the regulations and procedures. These apply to all students engaged in any assessment activity at the University, regardless of whether they are studying at Bucks or at one of its partner institutions.

Promoting Assessment Integrity

Many cases of academic misconduct involve plagiarism which arises because quotations from books and other sources are not properly referenced.

In order to help you understand how to present your work appropriately, we have a number of resources available to support you:

  • The Avoiding Plagiarism programme on Blackboard will help you understand the conventions of academic writing.
  • Cite Them Right Online is a web-based referencing resource which will enable you to reference just about any source and understand how to avoid plagiarism.
  • Turnitin is a web-based service available through Blackboard which can help identify potential plagiarism and incorrect or poor referencing.
  • The Learning Development Unit (LDU) can work with you to develop your academic ability through one-to-one tutorials or workshop sessions.

Advice for Students

In the event that you are involved in any allegation of academic misconduct, you will be given an opportunity to respond. If you need advice on any aspect of the investigative process you should speak to your School Registry Officer.

You may also wish to speak to a member of the Students’ Union Advice Centre. They are there to help you with any difficulties you might be experiencing and offer a professional, independent and confidential service.

Request for Review - Academic Misconduct

This form must be used to submit a Request for a Review, after you have received the notification of proven academic misconduct penalty (or the outcome of Academic Misconduct Penalty Hearing if expulsion was initially recommended). Please complete the form in full and submit to conduct@bucks.ac.uk within 10 working days of receiving notification of the proven academic misconduct penalty or Academic Misconduct Penalty Hearing
