What will I study?

Specialist Modules which are designed to develop knowledge and core skills such as the  completion of the RCN accredited National Health Service Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP), national immunisation programme,  travel care, ear care and wound care to name a few. 

As well as this you’ll discuss and evaluate the management and monitoring of several long-term conditions in primary care such as include asthma, COPD, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, dementia, frailty, cancer and end of life care, and how needs alter for vulnerable groups. 

In addition, modules will develop a critical understanding of the context of clinical practice and contemporary issues which impact on the delivery of care. 

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course has been designed to be delivered by blended learning. 

There will be face to face learning in the classroom in the form of lectures, demonstrations and tutorials, together with virtual sessions.

An E- learning resource has been developed to enhance your learning which will form part of the core learning material.  Whilst in practice you’ll be guided and supported by the supervisor, cervical screening mentor and tutors throughout the programme. 

What are the course entry requirements?

The University’s general entry requirements will apply to admission to this programme with the following additions: 

This work-based, blended learning part-time course is aimed at Registered Nurses (RGN) and nursing Associates (RNA) new to General Practice. Students will be qualified and hold a current professional registration on Part 1 of the Professional Register. 

All students will be working in general practice for a minimum of two days per week with access to supervisors working in this setting to support them through the programme. 

The minimum entry requirements for the programme are as follows: 

  • Non-academic entry requirements – Professional Registration on Part 1 of the Professional Register
  • IELTS – 6.5
  • Knowledge and Skills – Employed in General Practice
  • Have access to supervisors / practice assessors.

This is a 40-credit course and students will have to enrol onto the two modules. Students who have done a previous primary care course may be exempt from attending specific sessions already studied but they will have to complete all assessments of this module.
