Clinical Assessment and Biomedicine for Advanced Practice

Gain the skills required to assess patients across the patient journey, including knowledge of a wide variety of body systems and disorders. Take a history, complete a physical examination, and communicate your findings using appropriate terminology. With detailed knowledge of biomedicine, alongside findings from your clinical assessment you’ll be able to produce evidence-based management plans which aid the patient.

What will I study?

On this course, you will delve into various topics such as history taking using widely accepted consultation models to include medical, surgical, and mental health presentations across the lifespan.

You’ll gain examination skills for the following systems: 

  • Cardiac, Respiratory, Abdominal, Neurological, ENT, PV, Testicular and Prostate, Breast, Lymph, Ophthalmology, MSK and Dermatology in both adults and paediatrics.

Our study of biomedicine during the course will include the following:

  • Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the main body systems.
  • Biochemistry and microbiology
  • Pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of disease
  • Genomic and personalised medicine

You’ll be using evidence to understand the benefits and limitations of assessment methods and findings, Linking assessment with diagnosis and management. We will apply concepts in real-world scenarios and enhance your practical skills.

How will I be taught and assessed?

The learning and teaching approach will include focused lectures and seminars to build knowledge and understanding of foundation concepts for advanced practice. Seminars will engage in critical discussion, to apply evidence-based practice and explore a range of clinical diagnoses.

Practical classes, simulation and workshops will provide you with the core capabilities to apply in the practice setting, exploring the assessment, diagnosis and management of a range of conditions.

What are the course entry requirements?

Students studying this module must have a clinical Supervisor that is a Qualified Advanced practitioner with an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and minimum 3 years in the role, a Medical Doctor ST3 or above, or GP.

Please note all of the 2026/27 fees stated are subject to parliamentary procedure. Tuition fees are expected to increase each academic year in line with the maximum permitted value set by the Government for that academic year. The expected rise for Home undergraduate students (including those on a foundation year course), may impact both new and continuing students.
