What facilities I use as a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student

The expertise of the technicians is constantly streaming through creative students who go through the Red Sheds doors everyday with them never shy to share their knowledge or lend a helping hand.

As a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student in 2023 everything revolves around technology. Software's like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign dominate most of my time both inside and outside of lectures and seminars, however, at BNU we have state of the art facilities spread all over campus. My favourite - the Red Shed.

The Red Shed houses some amazing equipment that I continue to use to further my studies and enhance my unique design concepts. Now whilst the Red Shed is quite a large building with multiple sections my favourite part is the first-floor printmaking room. As you go in you are overcome with creative ideas as a range of new opportunities to expand your concept hits you. From etching and laser cutting, to screen printing and letter press (as well as much more), it truly is the home of hands-on art and design on campus. There really are no limitations when you’re in the Red Shed.

Whilst it is used to aid creative and vibrant studies it is always kept clean and fresh to ensure that your project can continue its steady progression. To accompany the elite level equipment, the Red Shed’s printmaking room is staffed with some top tier technicians who are always available to help students. No matter what the problem, the technicians face it head on and excel at the challenge.

As I said earlier, I am a BA (Hons) Graphic Design student and the Red Shed is like my second home on campus alongside the Graphics Studio. I have had a multitude of workshops which I have found advantageous in progressing my studies. Moreover, I have used these facilities outside of timetabled lesson time to move along with my projects as deadlines nears. Having access to equipment which I wouldn’t have thought of using, like the Victorian Times Letterpress, has well and truly offered mass improvements to my ideas and designs to ensure my portfolio stands out against others once it comes to that point in my career.

The expertise of the technicians is constantly streaming through creative students who go through the Red Sheds doors everyday with them never shy to share their knowledge or lend a helping hand. Thanks to the Red Shed’s printmaking room and its individual equipment, I’ve laser etched a book cover, hand book-binded numerous editorial projects, screen printed entire 30 page books and I aspire to continue making use of these facilities as I finish my 2nd year and progress into 3rd year.
