Tuncay Durna

Biography

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2022, I worked as a senior lecturer at Teesside University and as a lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. I have 16 years of policing experience in Turkish National Police at different ranks, including a two-year secondment to the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) Mission to Serbia as a Police Training Advisor. I also worked at Turkish National Police Academy and Dicle University as an assistant professor and as an associate professor. My teaching experience includes working as a teaching assistant, team teacher, and as an adjunct lecturer at Kent State University, USA, as well as delivering in-service training for law enforcement officers in several countries including Turkey, USA, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

I have an MA in Criminal Justice Studies and another MA in Public Policy granted from Kent State University where I also earned my PhD in Public Policy.

My principal research centres around of deterrence theory and traffic enforcement for road safety. My research also extends to police use of force, democratic policing, police training and education, and leadership and management in law enforcement agencies. My scholarly work includes publication of a book, several book chapters, various journal articles, and contributions in conferences.

My specialist knowledge has led me to work in and lead several research and education projects with Turkish National Police, OSCE, GRSP (Global Road Safety Partnership) and WHO (World Health Organization).

I have been awarded scholarships, Kent State University Graduate Student Senate’s Academic Excellence Award for my Master’s Dissertation, and Excellent Teaching Award at Anglia Ruskin University.
