Biography
  • Prior to joining Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) in 2024, Becky gained extensive practical experience within forensic science and working within ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories. She worked for Thames Valley Police (TVP) as Fingerprint Laboratory Officer within the Forensic Investigation Unit, where she was responsible for the development and recovery of finger marks from crime scenes and forensic exhibits. During this time, she also held a team leadership role, supporting operational delivery.

    Earlier in her career, Becky worked for Key Forensic Services (KFS) where she worked in several specialist roles. As a DNA Technical Specialist, she contributed to the validation and accreditation of Rapid DNA Technology for implementation within UK Police Forces. Within this role, she also acted as a Field Service Engineer, supporting the deployment and maintenance of forensic instrumentation. 

    In addition, Becky worked as an Instrument Specialist within the Drugs Unit at KFS, where she was responsible for applying analytical techniques such as Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectroscopy, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy to identify and determine the purity of controlled substances.

    Lastly, Becky trained in Questioned Documents as a Trainee Reporting Manager, carrying out comparative analysis of handwriting, signatures, and other disputed documents.

Qualifications
  • Becky has a first-class BSc (Hons) in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Plymouth and an MSc in Forensic Ballistics from Cranfield University. She is currently working towards her Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice with BNU.

Research Interests/Academic Interests
  • Becky brings a strong blend of academic knowledge and operational forensic experience to her teaching, with a particular interest in applying analytical and instrumental techniques within forensic investigations. She has a keen interest in advancing technology and implementing innovative methods that enhance efficiency and reliability of forensic analysis.

Currently Supervising
  • Becky is currently supervising undergraduate dissertation students studying a range of topics within forensic disciplines, such as the impact of cognitive bias on evidence interpretation.
