Fiona Galbraith

Biography

Following a 25 year career as an intelligence officer, I came to BNU in 2020 where I have been engaged, with other highly-experienced colleagues in developing and delivering new intelligence programmes. I pride myself on providing a dynamic learning experience which puts the needs of the student at the heart of all activity.

As an intelligence officer in the British Army, I led the military intelligence campaign on operations around the world. I also worked as a strategy officer, including during a period of exchange service with United States Joint Forces.

I hold a BA (Hons) in Contemporary East European Studies at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London and an MA in Defence Studies from Kings College London. I have passed the Joint Services Command and Staff course, which is the professional planning and command development course for British military leaders. I have also studied Land Management, gaining an MSc from the Royal Agricultural University.

My main interest is in competing political systems, some of which I have had the privilege of experiencing close-up and at their most fragile. By developing our intelligence processing capability, which has human intellect at its core, I believe we can understand our world and develop our societies more successfully. I am also focussed on the leadership of intelligence operations including the application of established analytical techniques to modern intelligence challenges, often characterised by data-swamping and open sources.

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (FHEA) and of the Chartered Management Institute (FCMI). I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2020.
