Danny Clarke

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2014, I worked as a motivated registered nurse for many years which has given me practical experience in the high-level care of patients in the operating department. Within the clinical area I have gained varied experience of numerous surgical specialities ranging from neuro to emergency surgery. This led me to develop a keen interest in urology surgery with a focus on gender reassignment surgery and postoperative patient cares.

I studied for my PGCE and Master’s in Education at Buckinghamshire New University and my specialist areas of interest and research are improving student engagement with e-portfolios, and the experiences of lecturers as they assess student’s academic work.

I am a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Clinical University Educators (CUE) Forum.

My specialist knowledge in nursing has led me to work with a wide range of people clinically, but in the educational sector I have worked closely with Eportfolio expert Barbara Nicholls on developing the student Eportfolio, which lead to me presenting at an international conference  on Eportfolio development and engagement.

My greatest accolade to date has been gaining my nursing qualification and achieving a Master of Arts degree. I have found the experience working clinically, caring for patients that are at their most vulnerable time, deeply humbling and rewarding. Having achieved the master’s degree, which has deepened my teaching knowledge, and by aligning practical clinical care and teaching knowledge together, I have found these insights have benefitted the academic growth of students both clinically and academically.
