Frailty and End of Life Medicine

This module aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of frailty, palliative care, and end-of-life management in healthcare. Explore the physiological, psychological, social, and ethical considerations in addition to the practical strategies involved in providing high-quality care for patients in these stages of life. 

Drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives, you will examine the challenges and opportunities in delivering person-centred care to frail and terminally ill patients, with an emphasis on promoting dignity, autonomy, and quality of life.

  • Study medicine across the lifespan: Gain an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of common clinical and social presentations, with the skills to analyse the impact on patients across the lifespan, you’ll design and implement specific patient plans for everyone as well as those in the frailty and end of life stage.  
  • Evidence based approach to policy: Apply an evidence-based approach to the assessment and management in end of life and frailty care considering current healthcare policy. Using data and research you can advocate for patients promoting their rights and promoting social justice with an understanding of legal and ethical frameworks.
  • Focus on End of life care: You’ll be identifying disease stage death and dying clinical presentations including cognitive impairment across the lifespan, with a focus on symptom management & investigations, communication, documentation and referrals, pharmacology considerations, ethical considerations, difficult conversations and advanced care planning.

What will I study?

We will cover, with inclusion of some other relevant information, the following topics:

  • Identifying disease stages
  • Death and dying
  • Common clinical presentations including cognitive impairment across the lifespan
  • Symptom Management & investigations 
  • Communication, documentation and referrals
  • Pharmacology considerations
  • Ethical considerations
  • Difficult Conversations and advanced care planning

How will I be taught and assessed?

Seminars to engage learners in case-based discussions, relevant evidence, and associated presentations. Practical classes and workshops are to understand clinical management.

Regular practice and supervision will take place in the workplace and include formative assessments to gain exposure and feedback (development of an ePortfolio). This is the primary method of assessment. 

What are the course entry requirements?

Students studying this module must have a clinical Supervisor that is a Qualified Advanced practitioner with an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and minimum 3 years in the role, a Medical Doctor ST3 or above, or GP.

What are the tuition fees

Please note all of the 2026/27 fees stated are subject to parliamentary procedure. Tuition fees are expected to increase each academic year in line with the maximum permitted value set by the Government for that academic year. The expected rise for Home undergraduate students (including those on a foundation year course), may impact both new and continuing students.
