Clinical Management of Minor Injury and Illness

This module aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the assessment, diagnosis, and management of minor injuries and illnesses across the lifespan. We enable you to develop advanced clinical skills in the context of primary care or urgent care settings.

- Demonstrate your proficiency: Demonstrate advanced clinical skills in assessing and diagnosing minor injuries and illnesses. Interpret radiographic images with proficiency and accuracy using a structured approach. With the skills needed to evaluate and implement evidence-based management strategies for a range of minor injuries and illnesses you’ll be able to demonstrate your abilities as you go through the course.
- Collaborate across departments: Recognise and respond to potential complications and emergencies associated with minor illnesses and injuries. Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating effective leadership, supervision and coordination of care for patients with minor illness or injury.

What will I study?
The course content will include:
Assessment and diagnosis of minor injuries and illnesses:
- History taking
- Physical examination
- Diagnostics and investigations.
- Anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology relevant to minor injuries and illnesses.
Evidence-based management strategies for minor injuries and illnesses:
- Wound care and closure
- Burns
- Injuries to the Eye
- Fractures, Splints, Plaster of Paris, Sprains and strains, Dislocations
- Head injuries
- X-ray request and interpretation (all ages)
- Insect and animal bites
- Foreign bodies
Assessment and management of common minor illnesses, including presentations from the following systems:
- Dermatology
- Ears, Nose and Throat
- Eyes
- Gastrointestinal and hepatic
- Male and female anatomical health
- Medication review
- Musculoskeletal
- Paediatric illness
- Renal and Genito-urinary
- Respiratory
- Adult and paediatric patients
- Professional, legal and ethical responsibilities
- Safeguarding and identification of at-risk service users.
- Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for pain management
- Interprofessional collaboration, effective communication and onward referral
How will I be taught and assessed?
Lectures cover foundational knowledge required to progress through the module. Seminars engage in case-based discussions, relevant evidence, and presentations.
Assessment will be formative and summative throughout the module. Formative assessment, in the form of regular clinical supervision and ePortfolio entries (WPBAs), will provide students with ongoing feedback.
A summative ePortfolio review will enable the demonstration of key learning outcomes and core capabilities. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) will consolidate learning and allow students to evidence core capabilities.
What are the course entry requirements?
Students studying this module must have a clinical Supervisor that is a Qualified Advanced practitioner with an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and minimum 3 years in the role, a Medical Doctor ST3 or above, or GP.
