Professor Paul Morgan

Biography

In my role as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience), I ensure that the University champions the interests of students and the student experience. I work closely with the Dean of Students and other colleagues and Bucks Students’ Union to deliver a sector-leading, high quality student experience.

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2004, I was a company director of a business in the language travel industry. I previously taught sports psychology and sports business management at universities including Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Birmingham. I’ve also enjoyed coaching tennis in the UK and overseas.

My qualifications include a first-class honours degree in Business and Sport (Manchester Metropolitan University), MSc Sports Science (Loughborough University), MA Leadership and Management (Buckinghamshire New University) and a PhD in Sports Psychology (Loughborough University). I’ve been an external examiner for several universities and my most recent involvement was at Manchester Metropolitan University for the Masters in Sporting Directorship.

My specialist area of research focuses on the psychology of sporting excellence and its transfer to other performance domains such as business, military, and healthcare. My specific area of expertise lies in ‘team resilience’. This is a particularly interesting topic to better understand how teams can withstand adversity and pressure to achieve optimal performance.

I am a Chartered Psychologist (British Psychological Society) and I served as a member on the national committee as well as the CPD Lead for the Division of Sport and Exercise Psychology for many years. I am a member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

My specialist knowledge has led me to work closely with a range of Olympic, professional, international, and amateur sports organisations including The Netherlands Olympic Committee, Bloso Expert Platform Sport Psychology (Belgium), and more locally, High Wycombe Rugby Club. I’ve presented my team resilience research at international conferences such as the Association of Applied Sport Psychology, American Psychological Association, and FEPSAC (European Federation of Sport Psychology).

I’ve enjoyed leading and contributing to a number of university successes during my time at BNU including the delivery of a CPD programme for The Football Association, the establishment of a Swim England accredited National Performance Centre (in partnership with Wycombe Swimming and Bucks' Students Union), developing our Sport England Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme and most recently leading on the establishment of physiotherapy and paramedicine programmes at BNU.
