-
Naveed Kapadia is a qualified EASA pilot and Senior Lecturer in Aviation, leading the MSc Aviation Operations and Management programme at Buckinghamshire New University. He has over 15 years of experience spanning global flight training and European airline operations and has held senior leadership roles in international organisations. Naveed’s academic practice blends industry insight with research-led teaching in flight safety, human factors, and automation. He is recognised with BNU’s Teaching Impact Award for excellence in education. He is an active contributor to the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Flight Operations Safety Group, regularly speaking at industry forums and contributing expert commentary on aviation safety and emerging trends.
-
Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA, 2025), with an MSc in Air Transport Management from City St George’s, University of London (2019), and an EASA-qualified Commercial Airline Pilot.
Before joining Buckinghamshire New University, he worked as the Manager of Crew Training and Standards for a leading European tour operator, navigating challenges that included the UK-EU exit, the Boeing 737 Max grounding, the Boeing 787's entry into service, European fleet strategy, and pandemic-related operational challenges. Naveed is currently undertaking PhD research on the Crew Cognitive Resilience Index (CCRI™), collaborating with global partners to strengthen pilot cognitive resilience in highly automated flight decks.
-
Naveed’s work centres on human performance in safety-critical systems, with a particular focus on cognitive resilience, trust calibration, and human–AI teaming on the flight deck. He investigates how automation and emerging technologies influence pilot decision-making, and how training and regulation can be adapted to maintain safety and competence. This aligns with BNU’s Thrive 28 strategy to deliver impactful, profession-focused education and applied research.
-
Naveed is a Member (MRAeS) of the Flight Operations Safety Group, which contributes to the Royal Aeronautical Society’s broader initiatives in the aerospace and aviation industry. Naveed is also a Senior Fellow at Advance HE (SFHEA).
-
Post-Graduate research in aviation human factors and flight operations safety, with additional projects on aviation sustainability, the role of drones in warfare, and the economics and policy of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). I also oversee studies using AI-driven analytics to enhance flight-crew wellbeing and performance, alongside technology-enabled training in airline and simulator contexts.
-
- Human Factors and Cognitive Resilience in Airline Operations: Applications to Training Design, Safety Management, and Regulatory Practice.
- Industry engagement through RAeS working groups on pilot performance, automation, and future operations.
- Applied studies on AAM economics and policy, uncrewed systems and security, and AI-enabled monitoring to support crew wellbeing and operational resilience.
Key themes for my research are:
My work integrates aviation safety, security, economics and policy to understand how people, procedures and intelligent technologies shape real-world operations. Through the Crew Cognitive Resilience Index (CCRI™), I examine cognitive resilience, decision accuracy, workload and performance, trust calibration and human–AI teaming. A core strand focuses on inclusion and social impact by embedding equitable training and wellbeing support that widens participation and improves social mobility. This evidence informs regulatory and training innovation across conventional operations.
