Karen Bartlett

Biography

I joined Buckinghamshire New University in March 2022. Previously, I was a lecturer in Costume at the University of Huddersfield, and a senior lecturer in Design for Exhibition and Museums at the University of Lincoln. At Nottingham Trent University, I also held the post of course leader for Costume Design and Making.

I have an MA in Electronic Arts from Middlesex University, and I gained a BA in Theatre Design from Central School of Art, London. My research area is within the field of set and costume design for performance and exhibitions. I am particularly interested in the design and creation of costume objects, especially through the 3D technique of knit and crochet practice. I continue to research and practise as a costume maker across historical and performance dress and 3D design disciplines.

I am a member of HEA Level 2 Professional Recognition (HEA Fellow) and have previously been an external examiner for BA Historical, Performance Costume at Yorkshire Coast College, and BA Scenic Arts at Rose Bruford College.

Within the UK, I have designed productions for Nottingham Playhouse, Bill Kenwright, York Theatre Royal and Mercury Theatre, Colchester amongst others. I have experience of working internationally in theatre, dance and opera productions. From 1991 – 1997, I was employed at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, and designed for the Hong Kong Urban Council Opera, Hong Kong International Festival and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre.
