Biography
  • I have over four decades of experience in social work and mental health. For the first part of my career I was employed in a variety of roles in social work and mental health services and worked as a Senior Approved Social Worker and Consultant Social Worker. In 2006, I moved into Higher Education and have been employed continuously as a full-time Senior Lecturer ever since.

I have written, taught and delivered a wide range of modules and programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate degree level. I am passionate about mental health and my research interests are in this specialist area. I am particularly interested in the application of social science theory and research to practice. I am a lifelong scholar of classical Marxism and am invigorated by its rich intellectual tradition.

I am also passionate about widening participation for non-traditional students in Higher Education and particularly in relation to professional qualifying programmes. I teach law for professionals, ethics, social science and social research methods across the social work programmes at BNU. I am also the Programme Lead for the postgraduate and post-qualifying Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) programme. I am a qualified teacher and researcher and have over two decades experience supervising dissertations on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
