Dr David Black

Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2019, I was a lecturer in Social Science at Bath Spa University. I have also taught politics at the University of the West of England, Bristol University and Southampton University.

I studied for my PhD in Politics at Bristol University, focusing on the use of detention in the management of international migration, and the role of criminal justice institutions in governing marginalised social groups more broadly. In my research, I seek to understand inequalities of social class and ethnicity, and how political action can reproduce or transform these. I am particularly interested in approaches that explore the links between society, state and economy in understanding and responding to issues of social inequality, with a view to apprehending how academic research can best inform policy and practice.

My specialist knowledge has enabled me to pursue consultancy projects in academic curriculum development, designing undergraduate programmes in Politics for Bath Spa University, and a Global Citizenship Course for Shorelight Education. The latter has been taught in universities and educational institutions in 13 US cities and 14 countries around the world.
