Senior Lecturer Rania Khbais shortlisted for Security Institute award

Rania Khbais

Senior Lecturer in Aviation Security, Rania Khbais, has been shortlisted for a ‘Syl Award’ by The Security Institute. Rania has been put forward as 'Academic Achiever of the Year’ in memory of Wilf Knight.

The ‘Academic Achiever of the Year’ award recognises an academic dissertation demonstrating an outstanding contribution to the security profession. Rania’s dissertation is entitled ‘Is it a man’s world? Arab women in Aviation Security Management. A comparison between the East and the West’ and aims to link culture and leadership theories with gender issues.

Rania states that the number of female aviation security management practitioners is low globally but is even lower in Arab countries despite improvements to female participation in education.

Findings highlight that aviation is a sector that is rife with characteristics and practices that present significant barriers to women. However, they also highlight that these barriers are a result of deeply entrenched societal and cultural barriers, resulting in the underutilisation of women’s capabilities.

Rania commented: “I am delighted to have been shortlisted by the Security Institute.  It is nice to be recognised by such an organisation which will draw further light to the issue and hopefully assist this work in achieving its purpose.”

The winner will be announced at The Security Institute’s Gala Awards Dinner at Sea Life, London on Tuesday 30 November.
