DTS information for new students
Welcome to Digital and Technical Services (DTS) at Buckinghamshire New University. The University offers a range of Digital and Technical Services to support your studies. Find out what you can do to get you going quickly with DTS.
Information for all Bucks students, including partner college students
All new students are provided with a Username which can be used to access BNU systems and resources, such as the Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard), Microsoft Office 365, computer labs, Wi-Fi access and print services.
Your Username is made up of your student ID followed by @bucks.ac.uk. For example 20905674 @bucks.ac.uk
Note: You will need your IT credentials in order to enrol on line as a new student. We will send you an email when you are able to access your IT account. If you try and access your account prior to that, your credentials won’t be recognised.
Along with your BNU Username, you will need a password to access the BNU systems.
You need to activate your account by resetting your password (you will need access to your personal email, provided in the enrolment form, as you will be emailed a code that you need to enter to reset your password).
Your password must be strong and meet the following requirements:
- Be a minimum of 8 characters long, longer the better.
- Contain a mixture of upper and lower‐case letters.
The University will be sending important communication, including emails from tutors and receipts from Turnitin submissions, to your allocated email address.
This is not an email you can log into (no mailbox to send and receive emails), but rather an email address of the format <studentID> @bucks.ac.uk i.e. 20905674 @bucks.ac.uk.
To receive all communications, you need to ensure your University email address is setup to forward emails to your personal mailbox. For all new students, this has already been setup to forward emails to your personal mailbox you gave us before enrolment.
If you want to change to a different address, visit our Email Forwarding page.
Blackboard, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), provides access to online learning resources for all your courses including course materials and other important information.
You can access Blackboard at https://my.bucks.ac.uk
You have to use your Bucks username (studentID @bucks.ac.uk e.g. 12345678 @bucks.ac.uk) and password to access Blackboard.
Blackboard Collaborate provides the BNU online classroom platform. You will be able to attend your online / remote teaching sessions via this platform.
To submit your course work for checking plagiarism you will need to use TurnItInUK, which is accessed via Blackboard. You can submit your paper, view your similarity score and/or any feedback.
As a BNU Student you are entitled to a range of free software for the duration of your studies. This includes Microsoft Office 365, SPSS and Solidworks.
Microsoft Office 365:
You can access Microsoft Office 365, either via Office online (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and 5TB of One Drive storage) or by installing the full Office applications on up to five personal devices for free.
The IT Service Desk provides IT support across all campuses, including partner college students. Visit the IT front desk on the second floor of the Gateway building or the first floor of Uxbridge campus or contact us by phone (01494 605000 or ext 5000) or email (IT@bucks.ac.uk)
Information for students studying onsite at Bucks campuses
Eduroam is the main Wi-Fi network for students and is available across all campuses. Connect to the Wi-Fi when on site with your laptop, phone or tablet. Wired and Wi-Fi connections are also available at the University halls of residence by Optify (PCCW Global Networks).
You can print, copy and scan using any of the Multi-Functional Device (MFD) printers at the University campuses. You can also print to the MFDs from your own laptop/mobile device while you are at the University campuses and connected to University Wi-Fi.
Visit the Printing page to know about the printer locations, help on how to print/copy/scan and more.
You need to add credit to your account before you are able to print. To add credit go to https://epayments.bucks.ac.uk/print/
Personal Shared Drive (G: Drive)
Each student is allocated a secure personal storage space on the G: drive. Use this drive to save your important work or study files that do not need to be shared, as this drive is backed up daily. You can also access the shared drive remotely at https://mydocs.bucks.ac.uk using your BNU username and password.
Each student is also allocated 5 Tb of space on OneDrive. OneDrive is useful when you share files when working collaboratively or when files are too large to send by email. You can access OneDrive online at https://office.com by using your BNU username and password.
When using the University computers, save your work on your G: drive or on OneDrive.
Open Access Areas:
The University has a number of open access computer areas available to students to use at different locations.
Depending on your course, you may also have access to classrooms with the specialised software you need for your course. See the detailed list of software available in each classroom.
You can login to any of the University computers using your BNU username and password.
Students can borrow laptops using the self-service cabinets, which can be found:
- High Wycombe Campus – second floor of Gateway Library
- Uxbridge Campus – First floor of Uxbridge Library
