You’ll have the opportunity to attend national events like The London Marathon, and provide hands-on care for athletes before and after their competition.
What facilities can I use
You’ll have access to our Human Performance Lab which has been designed to enhance athletes by analysing their techniques to develop the most effective strength and conditioning regime.
This facility will help you understand injury prevention and rehabilitation in a way that you won’t be able to get from a textbook – another unique thing about joining BNU!
What will I study?
This course is ideal for you if you’re interested in the broader area of sports medicine. You’ll learn how to diagnose injured athletes and treat them effectively. You’ll also explore the biomechanics of human movement. Physiology and functional anatomy.
Modules will range from core scientific principles of exercise to injury assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.
Over the three years you’ll spend at BNU, you’ll learn about human anatomy, health and exercise physiology, therapeutic interventions and data analysis. In your final year, you’ll also work closely with your personal tutor to dive more deeply into an area you’re passionate about to deliver your final dissertation project.
Most Sports Therapists work as self-employed practitioners, so this course has been designed to combine therapy and business skills to give you the confidence and entrepreneurship you’ll need to start a small business.
How will I be taught and assessed?
This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.
By studying our BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy course, you’ll always learn through a combination of theoretical and practical methods.
Our expert academic staff will teach you through lectures, seminars, practical/lab sessions and tutorials, and importantly you’ll also participate in work placements and independent study.
We also offer all our students the opportunity to visit or be visited by external industry partners so you can hear from the professionals currently working on the ‘front line’ of sports therapy.
Each module will have its own assessment criteria, but you’ll largely be working on presentations, vivas, reports and essays, case studies, work-related and practical assessments.
To support your learning, you’ll also have access to lots of additional resources too like journal articles, online books, electronic databases and our library, all of which will help with your independent study.
Throughout the course you’ll have plenty of practice-based learning experiences with an anticipated total of more than 300 placement hours. These will help you develop your clinical skills and learn how to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate injured athletes and patients.
BNU is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field.
We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.
Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student, to increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for the 3-year undergraduate programme, or those who do not feel fully prepared for a Level 4 course, will be considered for the 4-year programme including a Foundation Year. With our BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy degree, you’ll be qualified to work as a sports therapist for professional teams, clubs and private clinics. You’ll be able to pursue a career in exercise management and rehabilitation, or as a physiotherapy assistant.
Studying a course accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists also enables access to the additional training you’ll need to work in professional football and rugby.
Alternatively, you may choose to further your studies at postgraduate level in an area like sports medicine, sports science and physiotherapy.
