As traditional job roles within sports business are changing, so too have the lines between coaching and management. This degree will give you the experience and understanding you’ll need to help you develop management skills to flourish specifically in the sports industry.
Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?
By studying with us, you’ll be associated with a University that has been a pioneer in sport-related studies for over 15 years. We have a first-class reputation for our sport courses and, as a graduate, you’ll be able to take full advantage of our partnerships with public and private sector sport organisations.
By the time you graduate, you’ll be well prepared to step into any career within the sports industry because of the practical, hands-on experience you’ll collect throughout your three years at BNU.
We have strong relationships with a number of sports organisations, including the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey, Stoke Mandeville Hospital (the birthplace of the Paralympics), the pro basketball team, London United, and Reading Ladies Football Club. What’s more, we’re one of the only universities in the UK to focus on disability sport, an area of increasing performance.
You’ll build a strong business studies foundation and an understanding of the unique challenges and issues facing sports management. Our programme gives a blend of professional and academic elements to give you the essential knowledge and experience of the sports industry as well as the important tools you need to coach athletes successfully.
What facilities can I use?
Our Human Performance, Exercise and Wellbeing Centre includes an indoor three-lane running track that incorporates 3D motion-capture technology. This facility helps to enhance athletes’ performance through improved technique, and also assists with injury prevention and rehabilitation.
The Human Performance laboratory is also equipped for assessing a range of physiological, biomechanical and psychological parameters.
What will I study?
You’ll spend time focusing on how different organisations in sport are structured and explore consumer behaviour within the industry whilst learning all about the important ‘coaches toolkit’.
We’ll look at athlete development and analysis, spending time in our Human Performance Laboratory. You’ll explore both traditional and advanced technologies and get to know the various resources available to you in this field.
You’ll learn the different techniques used for analysing performance and sharpen your athlete development and business skills. What’s more, many coaches in the industry are self-employed so we‘ll set you up for success as a business-savvy and innovative entrepreneur.
Key modules in event planning and operations management will be studied alongside those in funding and economics. This broad approach ensures you’ll be ready for today’s diverse and ever-growing sports industry when you step into your future career.
How will I be taught and assessed?
You'll be taught through lectures, seminars and practical sports coaching sessions whilst being assessed through various methods including coursework, practical assessments, and exams.
The coaching modules across all three years include practical opportunities for you to develop and practice key coaching skills like preparation and planning, hands-on coaching and practice evaluation.
You’ll be encouraged to become increasingly independent in your learning as the course progresses. You’ll learn key concepts in lectures and then go onto discuss them with your tutor and course mates in workshops and seminars.
In your final year you’ll be given the opportunity to develop your skills as a reflective practitioner by applying both academic and practical experience. You’ll move confidently into your final dissertation project where you’ll be able to focus on a particular area that you’re especially passionate about.
