Why study at Buckinghamshire New University?

For the new generation of managers, change is the only consistency. With technology constantly evolving, it’s impossible to foresee what the world will look like in a few years’ time. But with the right skills, you can cope and succeed in any situation.

We can’t predict the future. But we can give you the skills and knowledge to help you become a rising talent within business, government or a non-profit organisation. We see it as our responsibility to encourage your curiosity, confidence and ability to adapt. That way, you’ll have everything you need to secure your ideal career when you graduate.

Our BA (Hons) in Business Management degree gives you wide exposure to all aspects of business in an organisation. Your CV will look good no matter how the job market changes during your studies.

Our strong links with industry and knowledge of their requirements for graduates helped to shape this programme.

We will help equip you the knowledge and understanding of contemporary best practice in strategic international management as well as help you develop your personal skills, preparing you for your first roles in management or for running your own business.

To make sure you have the latest knowledge, our academic staff keep themselves up-to-date. Most come from industry, and our links can give you practical experience of business life. You will also benefit from guest lecturers, who can demonstrate the relevance of the teaching in a business context.

From day one, your future career is our focus. A key feature of the programme is to blend both academic study and skills development in order to enhance your employability. We have a strong emphasis on flexibility, teamwork and creative solutions so you’ll graduate ready to succeed in your working life.

Throughout the course, you’ll be working on live client briefs under real-time pressures. You’ll experience a range of unique scenarios throughout your studies at Bucks Business School to apply the theory you learn in practice.

Our students are often asked to develop solutions for a wide-range of businesses. This allows you to gain real-world, hands-on experience while businesses benefit from having dedicated consultants to carry out research and offer advice tailored to their needs.

We’ve had students consulting major companies as well as helping start-ups to get their businesses on the move.

Some of the large companies we have worked with include:

We have also worked with local businesses such as Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and KVA Digital.

With small classes, you’ll get the chance to interact with peers and lecturers to develop your skills and, through our strong links with industry, you’ll be able to transition seamlessly from student to professional.

What facilities can I use?

We’ve invested in a range of state-of-the-art facilities across our campuses to support your learning.

Our library is the perfect place to find the resources you need and a quiet place to study, filled with four floors of books, journals, computer suites and study rooms. Or, if you’d rather work off campus, e-Journals and resources are only a few clicks away using our Virtual Learning Environment.

What will I study?

On this programme you will develop a good understanding of the nature of business management in a world of volatility, uncertainty, change and ambiguity.

You will also develop key skills, such as empathy, problem solving and creativity, which will ensure you are well placed to enter the employment market. These skills are increasingly important in a world with technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are now fulfilling key business activities.

You will also learn about how technology is impacting business, so that you can understand how technology can underpin innovation and improvements to business and organisations.

In year one, you will learn about the fundamentals that provide a sound basis for your study of business management. Core modules include finance, marketing, contemporary business environments, HR, leadership and management skills.

In year two, you will gain a more strategic understanding of business issues, and in particular work with real clients to support you in implementing changes to their business.

In the final year, you will be expected to integrate, apply and evaluate the knowledge you have gained through independent study on your dissertation or consultancy project. There is an ongoing emphasis on leadership skills, particularly within a changing business environment.

The dissertation or a consultancy project will be a key focus in your final year and will allow you to specialise on your area of interest. This will prove invaluable when you graduate, allowing you to showcase your particular area of expertise at job interviews.

How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is offered as a four-year programme, including an initial Foundation Year. The Foundation Year will allow you to develop your academic study skills and build confidence in your abilities, identifying your own strengths and development needs for progression onto an undergraduate degree.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) refer frequently to ‘accidental managers’ within business; those people who have been promoted due to competence in one role but who are not trained or equipped to be managers. By focusing on this element within our degree programmes, we will ensure that you have already started to develop management and leadership skills in readiness for the workplace.

The course focuses on the ability to think critically and will enable you to analyse and evaluate solutions to complex, real-life problems. We will help you understand contemporary management theories but, of equal importance, we will also give you the opportunity to apply and integrate that knowledge in live projects.

Academics who teach on the programme have a wide range of experience and ongoing links with industry. Many of our staff are guest lecturers, conference speakers and content contributors so you’ll be learning from real leaders in their fields.

We also welcome a wealth of guest speakers; top professionals from across industry come to Buckinghamshire New University to help you understand how your degree applies to working in business, and how you can learn from their experiences.

Throughout your studies you’ll hear stories from people working in businesses of all sizes. This gives you the chance to learn about various job functions and different corporate cultures, and ultimately, your regular exposure to industry helps make you employable from the moment you graduate.

With smaller class sizes, we give our students one-to-one teaching and support. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate on projects and live briefs with students from other business management degree programmes, gaining the practical and transferable skills you need for your career.

We introduce key business speakers and live briefs as assessments throughout the course. You will also be expected to complete essays/reports as well give presentations, in order to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Your dissertation/consultancy project, completed in your final year, represents a major piece of independent research focused on strategic business issues of your choice. This will prove invaluable when you graduate, allowing you to showcase your particular area of interest at job interviews.

Placements Plus

BNU is a Placements Plus university. So, whatever degree you do, you can be sure there’ll be plenty of industry-relevant opportunities on offer, to help you get into your chosen field.

We’ll also prepare you for work beforehand, with special skills for work training, further boosting your CV, and building skills employers will value. In recognition of the value we place on these skills we have incorporated this experience into your study time.

Placements Plus is all about helping you get some valuable experience under your belt while you’re a student, to increase your choices later, and help you get the graduate-level job you want.
