I never realised the importance of the materials we use until we were asked to compare their importance in particular specifications. The focus on Sustainability, Environmental Impacts and Safety will tremendously help our Kitchen Design in the future.

The course builds on the study undertaken in the FDA Kitchen Design here at Buckinghamshire New University which has been successfully running for seven years. During your time on this course at BNU you will gain key experience that will help you get ready for employment or the next step upon graduation. This course is designed so that you can relate your studies to your existing role and working environment, facilitating a synthesis of learning and development.

You’ll have the opportunity to be part of an innovative course that’s led by our dedicated and industry-facing course team. As well as gaining direct access to guest lectures you can benefit from live project briefs, master classes, and plenty of networking opportunities.

BNU also offers you access to a range of our state-of-the-art facilities where we have our specialist workshops and equipment, from wood and metal work to 3D printing, there are many ways for you to express your creativity.

What facilities can I use?

At BNU we have a range of specialist facilities for you to use, including; our 3D printer, industry-standard studios, technical machines and high quality equipment.

The High Wycombe Campus also has an industry-standard range of art and design facilities, including a computer lab, photography studios and darkroom, fashion and textile studios, workshops for wood, metal and ceramics, and facilities for mould-making and plaster work.

In our workshops, you’ll receive one-to-one teaching, working closely with lecturers, specialist technicians and alongside fellow students. Here you’ll be able to work, collaborate and create inspiring designs.

What will I study?

This course has been designed in conjunction with key members of the kitchen industry and is in response to national training needs. Exploring critical design practices such as speculative design and participatory design strategies, you’ll graduate from this course being able to demonstrate creative concepts from plan to finished product.

This unique course content is flexibly delivered in conjunction with the intensive residential events, which combine into a lively and contemporary study of this key industry. This blended learning opportunity is where you will meet your fellow students, the course team and our industry supporters.

You will use the skills and knowledge learnt on this course in conjunction with your current working environment or goal. This will help you gain a sophisticated and synthesised understanding of skills, abilities and knowledge for a role within a contemporary and future facing kitchen design industry.

On successful completion of the programme, you'll be able to recognise the conceptual and theoretical issues that underpin the practices of kitchen design. You'll be able to identify the emerging developments and trends within the kitchen industry and the way in which these have developed. You will also understand the ethical and sustainability issues affecting the design and production of kitchens.

In addition, you'll be able to generate concepts and ideas in response to set briefs as well as select and evaluate the effectiveness of appropriate materials, processes and environments used in the design and production of kitchens. You will be able to present solutions to design problems in set briefs and self-initiated work, demonstrating creative thinking and approaches to problem-solving in kitchen design.

How will I be taught and assessed?

Kitchens are a multi-million pound global industry. To maximise your share of that industry you need a highly skilled and knowledgeable workforce able to understand client needs, design trends and technological developments.

The Kitchen Design course is taught through a combination of online and face to face lectures, seminars and workshops, industry speakers, academic speakers, and masterclasses. Online sessions are generally scheduled for evenings to fit around your existing schedule and commitments.

Industry experts will share how they approach projects, develop imaginative designs and understand demands and constraints in kitchen design. However, you'll be expected to undertake further learning supported by tutors at a distance, using our online learning environment to maintain contact and submit short pieces of project work and gain comments and advice to improve it.

Teaching will focus on the most up to date and effective hybrid learning strategies, including debating, scenario planning, lectures and live briefs.

You will also be able to plan and manage kitchen projects to a professional standard and in adherence to industry and planning standards.

As well as this you’ll also gain the skills and knowledge to join an elite group of exceptionally qualified kitchen design professionals. Upon graduation you’ll become a creative, critical thinker who is thoughtful, and entrepreneurial in your approach and who go on to ‘break new ground’ and contribute to the field in a variety of ways and through a range of career paths including but not limited to:

What are the course entry requirements?

Students should normally have five GCSEs including English at grade C/4 or above and an appropriate Level three qualification such as A-levels, National Diploma, Access course, City & Guilds or equivalent.

However relevant work experience from a related industry sector, an aptitude for design and a willingness to commit to the level of personal study required will be given equal consideration.
