Before joining Buckinghamshire New University in 2021, I was Principal of the London College of Creative Media, the UK’s sector-leading Higher Education institution for contemporary music. Prior to leading a for profit HEI, I was Dean of Business and Law at London Metropolitan University, and Associate Dean of Business and Law at Leeds Beckett University. I have enjoyed sustained success in bold, entrepreneurial academic leadership throughout my career across a range of subjects from Geography and Environmental Science (establishing a School of Geography at the University of Glamorgan) and managing TNE partnerships at the University of Wales. I have worked for the QAA for over 10 years, recently part of the Advice and Guidance Writing Teams for the revised Quality Code, and participating in a number of reviews.
With extensive experience designing UG and PG awards centred on innovative curricula, effective learning and teaching, and integrated employability, I have worked nationally and internationally delivering a clear understanding of the relationship between teaching, Quality Assurance, and research reflected in external metrics. I have delivered numerous workshops and Chaired conferences through the Higher Education Academy, and it has led to government committee representation, and UKHE consultancy.
I studied for my PhD at the University of Hull and my specialist area of interest and research has been Coastal Zone Management, student experience, and Higher Education governance and quality assurance. It is interesting because in the diverse interests, what links them is where decisions are made, and the environment in which they are implemented. Policy implementation gaps are therefore a keen interest in my work.
Among professional associations, I am a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Educators (City Corporation of London), member of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce and a Chartered Geographer at the Royal Geographical Society.
My specialist knowledge has led me to work with multinational research projects, including Sohar University (Oman) and recently an EU projects on the European Dimension in Qualifications for the Tourism Sector for Russia and Kyrgyzstan. If asked for a career highlight, it would have to be supporting a master’s student’s thesis, conducting biological surveys of seagrass meadows and oceanic drop-offs in Palau, Micronesia, diving with Dugongs and sharks...
